Acer NeWeb Announces Bluetooth Enabled Solutions

Acer to Deliver Bluetooth(TM) Equipped Products Incorporating Bluetooth Wireless Technology From Ericsson Microelectronics and WIDCOMM

Acer NeWeb Corporation, the Acer Group's advanced wireless communication division, announced today plans to ship Bluetooth enabled modules for PCs and peripherals incorporating Bluetooth wireless technology from Ericsson Microelectronics and WIDCOMM Inc. Acer NeWeb will offer a new line of Bluetooth solutions -- including a PDA module, USB adapter and embedded module for notebook computers -- that leverage wireless communication technology to allow these and other electronic devices to talk to each other, the Internet and other networks. These innovative new wireless products will incorporate Bluetooth protocol software and OEM reference designs from WIDCOMM, and a short-range voice-and-data Bluetooth module from Ericsson Microelectronics. "We are committed to enhancing the speed and ease of communications worldwide," said Beck Chuang, VP of Acer NeWeb. "In partnership with Ericsson and WIDCOMM, we envision Bluetooth as the technology enabling us to make it happen. This strategic alliance is an important first step in the process." "Acer's world-class manufacturing capability and their relationship with the distribution channel will make these Bluetooth solutions successful in the market," said Hiep Pham, WIDCOMM president and CEO. "The delivery of Acer's Bluetooth products and its wide range of applications reinforces our strong belief in the reality of the Bluetooth market. These products will help seed the market to enable wireless networking." "As consumers move into the era of true wireless communications, Bluetooth solutions will form the critical link between an electronic device and the rest of the world," said Johan Tingsborg, vice president of Ericsson Microelectronics. "This alliance between Acer NeWeb, WIDCOMM and Ericsson Microelectronics represents a significant step forward in wireless information and communication technology." Acer NeWeb will manufacture and ship WIDCOMM's BlueConnect(TM) Bluetooth module for the Handspring Visor. The BlueConnect module will be available Q1 2001 with a targeted manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) of $100. Following the BlueConnect module, Acer NeWeb will manufacture a Bluetooth USB adapter based on WIDCOMM's BlueShare reference design and Ericsson Microelectronics' Bluetooth technology. The USB adapter will also be available Q1 2001 with a targeted MSRP of $100. In parallel to this development, Acer will manufacture the TravelMate 350, a notebook computer with Bluetooth wireless technology integrated inside of the computer. These Acer Bluetooth products will allow consumers to leverage wireless communications in a wide range of everyday tasks, including hot-synching their PDAs to their computers, enjoying no-plug access to the local area network, and accessing e-mail and the Internet while on the move.
