Conversa to Showcase Speech-Enabling Solutions for the Mobile World at Fall COMDEX 2000

Company Will Also Debut ''Free Speech'' Download Program

Some of the world's smallest and most mobile applications for speech recognition technology will be demonstrated by Conversa(R) and four of its partner companies at Fall COMDEX 2000, November 12-16 in Las Vegas.

Conversa, a global leader in enabling speech technologies for both mobile and traditional Internet access devices, will also officially announce its "Free Speech" program, in which any user can download Conversa Web at no initial cost and easily voice-enable their desktop computer.

"We believe that speech is changing the way people interact with technology," said Matt Scheuing, executive vice president of marketing for Conversa. "People want and need access to Web-based content no matter where they are or what device they're using. That's not something that will happen in the future. Our partners will be showing with us at COMDEX how they're making that possible that now."

Conversa will share its exhibit space at COMDEX (Booth L2863) with four partner companies, who will demonstrate how they have incorporated Conversa's CASSI(TM) (Conversa Advanced Symbolic Speech Interpreter) core speech engine into their respective technology offerings: Integrated Information Systems (IIS), Samsung Electronics, Wavemakers, and Xybernaut(R).

Integrated Information Systems (IIS) will exhibit a voice-enabled m-commerce Web application that offers consumers a complete wireless shopping experience. It utilizes Conversa's speech recognition technology, ported to Phone.com's UP Browser(R), to provide voice command navigation through the entire purchasing process.

Samsung Electronics will be showing the world's lightest and smallest wireless terminal, the Samsung CDMA-based Watch Phone. Embedded with Conversa's speech engine, it allows users to dial numbers and operate the phone through spoken commands.

Wavemakers(TM) will demonstrate Conversa's CASSI speech engine and its own ClearStream(TM) voice capture software to break through the noise barrier in car environments. The joint front end combines ClearStream's superior voice detection and speech cleaning with CASSI's world-class speech recognition solution to drive an onboard traffic finder. The voice interface to the traffic finder allows drivers to locate and avoid traffic situations without taking their eyes off the road.

Xybernaut(R) is the world leader in wearable computing solutions. Its Mobile Assistant IV(R) is a featherweight, wearable computer with all the functionality and connectivity of a fully networked desktop PC. With Conversa's speech enabled solution embedded, the wearer is able to connect to the Internet, retrieve data and search files all with simple voice commands.

Conversa has also chosen the week of COMDEX to publicly launch its "Free Speech"(a) campaign. Any user can go to the Conversa Web site at www.conversa.com and quickly and easily download Conversa Web to their own desktop computer. According to Scheuing, this free download is designed to introduce people to voice browsing.

"This program will allow people to see what the speech interface is all about," Scheuing said. "The same core speech engine drives Conversa Web as drives the speech-enabled devices such as those made by our partners. So accessing Web-based content on the handheld mobile Internet device will be an obvious, natural thing after using it on the desktop."
