Ericsson and D2 agree on partnership for fast UMTS launch

Ericsson and D2 signed an agreement for the fast UMTS network rollout in Germany. Ericsson will support the construction of D2's UMTS network by delivering, installing and servicing leading-edge network infrastructure equipment. This agreement, worth about 500 million Euros, is scheduled to run until the end of 2002.

D2 and Ericsson have already gathered broad experience in the live operation of UMTS by jointly running a UMTS test environment in Düsseldorf. For more than ten years, Ericsson has been a pioneer in UMTS with dedicated R&D activities.

"Germany is one of the most important markets in Europe, and D2 is market leader," says Bernt Högberg, President of Ericsson GmbH. "Following our close and highly successful cooperation in the rollout and expansion of D2's existing GSM network we will now make sure that D2 is well positioned for UMTS and able to quickly launch commercial UMTS services. We are looking forward to supporting D2 in reaching this milestone in the mobile phone business and to continuing our long lasting partnership."
