Motorola to Help Java Technology Developers Bring Wireless Device Applications to Market

Comprehensive developer support program provides tools and services to generate revenue opportunities for wireless application developers

Motorola (NYSE: MOT) today introduced a comprehensive developer support program to enable wireless developers to bring their applications to market through a suite of tools and services. The objective of this program is to create a community of successful developers who will gain revenue sharing opportunities created by next generation wireless devices that feature an open application environment. These devices, being developed by Motorola and other wireless handset manufacturers using Java™ 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME®) technology, will enable users to download applications from the Internet and upgrade their wireless phones.

This is the only developer support program in the industry that offers complete marketing, sales, distribution, and end user support. The program allows developers to take advantage of cost- effective and timely access to key development technologies and online resources. Motorola has designed the program to lower software development barriers, decrease start-up time and reduce costs to create revenue opportunities for developers.

Through this program, Motorola's iDEN® Subscriber Group will help developers by providing a free software developers' kit (SDK) on CD-ROM and web-based technical support. Once developers create compelling applications, Motorola will make available its fee- based application testing, personalized support, global marketing, distribution, billing, e-commerce backend processing, and end user support services. Application testing and network simulation are managed by an independent, third party vendor.

"Motorola is meeting the wireless communications needs of end users by facilitating the development of killer applications," said Peter Aloumanis, director of U.S. market operations for Motorola's iDEN Subscriber Group. "Motorola will put its considerable resources behind supporting developers in what they do best. They do the application development, and we handle the rest."

The Motorola developer support program has been established in anticipation of Motorola's first J2ME technology-enabled handset, which is expected to be available through iDEN operators in early 2001. Motorola is facilitating the development of applications for this new handset platform by providing developer support and a commitment to open application standards.

"This program is an integrated package of tools, services and solutions targeted to enable Java developers to participate in the emerging wireless Internet arena," said Curtis Sasaki, director of marketing, Consumer Technologies, Sun Microsystems. "It provides developers with an entry point into the wireless J2ME technology environment."

Developers can visit Motorola's iDEN developer support program website at www.idendev.com. Once they register for free, developers can request a complimentary CD-ROM loaded with tools, documentation and sample code to kick-start the wireless application development process.
