Motorola Wins Multi-Million Dollar 3G, Interoperability Contract With Sprint On West Coast

Motorola, Inc.'s (NYSE:MOT) Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS) has been awarded a multi-million dollar commercial contract to provide Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) equipment via Interoperability Specifications (IOS) and third generation (3G) cdma2000 1x high- speed packet data to Sprint PCS (NYSE:PCS) wireless network subscribers in the California Coastal Valley. It is the fifth 3G contract announced by Motorola since Oct. 17.

Motorola continues its leadership role as the primary proponent of the commercial deployment of open systems based upon the IOS. This deployment with Nortel Technologies, Inc., further confirms Motorola's IOS solution as an excellent choice for the CDMA operator community.

The IOS standard gives wireless operators the flexibility of selecting the radio frequency (RF) mobile sub-system independently from the mobile switching office.

"The California Coastal Valley win affirms our customer's commitment to commercially deploy IOS based networks," said Fred Wright, Motorola senior vice president and GTSS general manager for North America.

The contract also is the first within Motorola-supplied Sprint PCS network facilities to include a 3G network upgrade to 1x, scheduled for the second half of 2001. That upgrade will significantly increase voice capacity on each 1.25 MHz CDMA carrier. It also will enable 144 Kbps high-speed packet data. The new 1x packet data capability can enhance data throughput for wireless Internet users when used with a new family of voice or packet data subscriber devices to be introduced in the near future.

"This contract represents a major step in furthering our commitment to IOS," said Tony Krueck, vice president of engineering and network design at Sprint PCS. "By furthering IOS as a global CDMA standard, operators will gain the freedom to pick the best combinations of RF and switching platforms for their networks. These benefits will enable greater freedom of choice for wireless carriers, said Krueck.

Motorola's expansion of infrastructure in Sprint PCS markets and offering of CDMA wireless Internet phones, exemplifies Motorola's ability to provide end-to-end solutions. Besides the Coastal Valley contract, Motorola was awarded contracts for commercial expansions of successful IOS trials on Sprint PCS networks in Portland, Ore., and Oklahoma City, Okla.
