Sierra Wireless Enables the Fastest Wireless Wide Area Network on the Microsoft Pocket PC Platform

AirCard(R) 400 for Ricochet(TM) Brings High-Speed Wireless Access to the Compaq iPAQ

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ:SWIR)(TSE:SW.) announced today that its AirCard 400 for Ricochet enables the fastest wide area wireless network for iPAQ users.

The AirCard 400 for Ricochet provides 128 Kbps end-user speeds, which is 4-5 times faster than typical dial-up access. The AirCard 400 for Ricochet operates as an "Always On" wireless network interface card (NIC), not just as a dial-up modem, to provide Ricochet subscribers with reliable high-speed access to mail, data, corporate applications and the Internet. With this breakthrough speed, it is now possible for Pocket PC users to access rich media content including video files and graphic-intensive web sites wirelessly.

Because the AirCard 400 for Ricochet is a standard PC card, it can also be used in laptops and other Internet appliances as well as with iPAQ.

"We are pleased to offer the AirCard 400 for Ricochet to Pocket PC users. This strategically complements our AirCard product line as we continue to build new solutions for our PDA/handheld initiative," said Andrew Harries, senior vice-president for Corporate Development for Sierra Wireless. "The Pocket PC provides a rich platform ideal to take advantage of Metricom's Ricochet high speed wireless internet access. As Microsoft continues to focus on new wireless solutions for their Pocket PC and Windows(R) platforms, Sierra Wireless looks forward to working with them on enhancing those solutions with our technology and products."

"Microsoft is focused on bringing wireless solutions to the Pocket PC, and the development of innovative products such as the AirCard 400 for Ricochet is an integral part of our wireless platform and applications strategy," said Ben Waldman, vice president, Mobile Devices Division at Microsoft Corp. "We anticipate significant growth in the wireless market and look forward to working with Sierra Wireless and Metricom to meet the ever increasing demands for high-speed wireless Internet access on this and other networks worldwide."

"Accessing complete data content on the Internet can be a limited, frustrating experience when hampered by low-speed wireless networks," said John Wernke, senior vice president of marketing and sales for Metricom. "Today's demonstration brings a miniaturized laptop experience into full view. The AirCard 400 for Ricochet provides high-speed connectivity to Pocket PC devices, and will soon deliver a highly portable, complete Internet experience into the hands of users. Sierra Wireless has once again proven their technological leadership and product vision by extending Ricochet to the powerful new Pocket PC platform."

The Sierra Wireless AirCard 400 is currently being demonstrated at the Microsoft booth L4852 in the Pocket PC theatre at COMDEX 2000.
