TOUCHPAK Teams with IBM to Deliver Broadband Wireless Solutions

TOUCHPAK's Wireless Platform Showcases IBM's Hardware, Software & Services

TOUCHPAK (www.touchpak.com), a broadband wireless solutions provider, today announced that they are working with IBM to develop broadband wireless applications combining high technology with robust content and targeting enterprises, content providers and captive consumers.

TOUCHPAK has created a series of wireless applications that stream broadband content, including news, video, and e-commerce, and enable enterprise solutions such as inventory control and customer relationship management. TOUCHPAK's solutions simplify operations and enhance customer relationships, and will be deployed in a wide array of markets including restaurants, theme parks, airports, hospitals, stadiums, malls and other retail locations. One example of TOUCHPAK's current application portfolio is "Wireless Internet While You Wait," which brings broadband Internet interactivity on handheld devices into waiting environments in order to enhance the time spent at these locations.

Through a unique relationship that brings the right combination of tools, skills, and resources together, TOUCHPAK has been selected to join IBM's "jStart" (jump-start) Program, a program designed to help customers gain the critical experience they need using emerging and established technologies such as XML, Java, Pervasive Computing and Enterprise JavaBeans. The jStart Program allows customers to focus on meeting business objectives and the delivery of the application instead of focusing on development tool feature and function comparisons.

"In order to deploy TOUCHPAK's network with the speed and resources necessary to reach our goals, we had to go with IBM," stated Chun-Wei (Evan) Chen, president of TOUCHPAK. "The choice became obvious as we investigated our development options - only IBM can keep pace with our aggressive growth projections and the marketplace demand within the wireless field."

"The TOUCHPAK relationship embodies the core goals of the Net Generation Business and IBM as a whole," said Jim Corgel, general manager of IBM's Global Net Generation Business. "We are committed to identifying aggressive young companies and helping them develop their businesses within emerging sectors - both from an IT and a strategic growth perspective. TOUCHPAK is a dynamic company in a great space and we look forward to working with them to leverage the enormous potential of the broadband wireless market."

The TOUCHPAK system operates on IBM's UNIX servers or IBM eServer pSeries. The system will be deployed using IBM WebSphere(a) Transcoding Publisher, which dynamically translates Web content to a format that can be read on a handheld device. The database uses DB2(a) Universal Database for centralized and local stations communicating to IBM's HTTP server as the web serving mechanism. The system's initial capabilities will serve as a template for future development of wireless technologies as created by this agreement between TOUCHPAK and IBM.
