Wayport and Buffalo Align to Deliver Wireless Internet Access to Mobile Computer Users

Using Buffalo's Network Equipment and Wayport's Service, Road Warriors Get Fast, Convenient Connectivity in Airports and Hotels

At the COMDEX trade show today, Wayport Inc., the traveler's choice for portable high-speed Internet service and information, announced a marketing alliance with Buffalo Technology (USA) Inc. and TechWorks Inc., subsidiaries of Japan-based Melco Inc.

Under the agreement, the companies will join together to provide travelers with reliable, easy-to-use connectivity on the road.

Wayport, Buffalo Technology and TechWorks will jointly promote solutions that combine Wayport's high-speed wireless Internet access service with Buffalo's wireless PC network cards and access points. Together, these products and services allow laptop-carrying travelers in airports and hotels to gain convenient, secure wireless access to the Internet, email and corporate networks.

Wayport and TechWorks will join Buffalo Technology in its booth No. L7030 at COMDEX. The three companies are planning joint marketing activities such as offering coupons for Wayport's service to purchasers of Buffalo wireless cards and access points. Buffalo Technology and TechWorks both distribute the Buffalo brand in the U.S. from Melco Inc. in Japan.

"Wayport's mission is to simplify travelers' lives and increase the productivity of remote workers by providing easy-to-use connectivity on the road," said Dave Vucina, chief executive officer, Wayport Inc. "We are pleased to join with Buffalo Technology and TechWorks to increase the availability of wireless product and service offerings through convenient, bundled solutions. They share our commitment to industry-standard wireless networking and are leading providers of high-quality, reliable cross-platform networking products."

Both Wayport and Melco Inc. (Buffalo) are members of the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA), formed to certify interoperability of Wi-Fi(tm) (IEEE 802.11b) products and to promote Wi-Fi(tm) as the global wireless LAN standard across all market segments. Wayport's service and Buffalo products are based on the 802.11b - 11 Mbps wireless LAN standard.

"Our relationship with Wayport will enhance our ability to serve the expanding market for wireless networking, as business professionals increasingly begin to rely on high-speed connectivity in the office, home and now on the road," said Takafumi "Tommy" Nakano, president of Buffalo Technology (USA). "We chose Wayport because of their superior technology and their established footprint in the locations where remote users need Internet access the most."

Wayport recently launched its service at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, with plans to launch additional airports by mid-2001. In addition, Wayport offers both wired and wireless Internet access in hotels, with some 350 properties installed or scheduled to be installed by the end of this year. The company recently debuted its membership program --offering 50 free wireless connects per user through the end of the year -- designed to drive travelers to Wayport-equipped airports and hotels.
