Mobinor delivers sms and wap solutions to Scandinavia Online, the leading Nordic portal network

Earlier this fall, Scandinavia Online (SOL) launched free sms services as part of its focus on the emerging mobile Internet market. Mobinor developed key parts of the solution, in cooperation with internal experts from SOL. This launch was the first in a number of launches transferring SOL into a multi-device portal. Mobinor is a key part of the technology team in the implementation of the SOL mobile strategy.

Ringtones and Icons was a key part of the initial launch. - Experience both from Scandinavia and Japan shows that ringtones and icons are very popular, says Petter Karal, vice president of mobile services at SOL. We knew that ringtones and icons would be very popular. Rather than charging high prices like the rest of the market, we decided to make this service free, says Karal. - These services are not strategic per se, but the enormous traffic and positive branding effect is strateigic in promoting the full range of SOL Mobile Suite services vis-a-vis the end user.

SOL had high expectations for the launch of sms services, but the response was even better than hoped for. This put extremely high requirements on the scalability of the java based applications server handling the services. After a few days of tuning, the system has been handling very high volumes. The service was launched in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark within a short time span, and this put high pressure on the application servers. Scalability has been a high focus all the way in the project, but Dynamo, the java based application platform being used by SOL, is handling the volume very well, says Rune Hamnvik, CEO of Mobinor. Java has grown up to become a very stable and scalable technology he says, and SOL has a very good java platform. You can find more information about Mobinor and its services at www.mobinor.com

Mobinor has been utilizing all key features of the Dynamo platform. Dynamo has a very good environment for running java-based components that has been utilized fully by the project. Dag Wigum, CTO of Scandinavia Online, is CONTENT with the way Mobinor has utilized the application platform. - Mobinor has been utilizing all key features of our platform he says, and we are very satisfied with the work being done by Mobinor. In addition to developing a scalable system, our own developers have increased their ability to develop new applications on our application platform.
