Motorola Teams With Metrowerks To Offer CodeWarrior Developer Tools for Wireless Devices

Tools will help developers create J2ME applications for Motorola's multiple communication handsets

Motorola (NYSE:MOT) today announced an initial agreement with Metrowerks® to include Metrowerks' CodeWarrior® Integrated Development Environment (IDE) in Motorola's free Software Developer Kit (SDK) on CD-ROM from the company's iDEN® Subscriber Group. The CodeWarrior IDE provides developers with a complete set of tools for creating content and applications for wireless devices based on Sun Microsystems' Java™ 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME™).

Developers can request a free CD-ROM, including CodeWarrior, by registering on the Motorola developers' support program web site at www.motorola.com/idendev.(1)

This memorandum of understanding has been established in anticipation of Motorola's J2ME technology-enabled multiple communication handsets, which are expected to be available in the first half of 2001 through iDEN network operators including Nextel Communications and Southern LINC in the United States and TELUS Mobility/Clearnet in Canada. By integrating J2ME technology, these iDEN phones can run local and network-based applications, allowing developers to extend server-based applications to the mobile environment.

"We see tremendous interest from developers in creating applications for wireless devices and consumer electronics based on the J2ME environment," said David Perkins, president and CEO of Metrowerks. "CodeWarrior helps developers take advantage of this opportunity by allowing them to quickly create content for J2ME technology-enabled devices like Motorola's multi-service iDEN handsets."

Motorola is facilitating the development of applications for this new handset platform by providing developer support and a commitment to open application standards. The free CD-ROM is one component of Motorola's comprehensive developer support program, which includes application testing, personalized support, global marketing, distribution, billing, e-commerce backend processing, and end-user support services.

"Metrowerks' CodeWarrior provides developers with the tools they need to create innovative applications for Motorola's J2ME-enabled multiple communication phones," said Bill Werner, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola's iDEN Subscriber Group. "This alliance demonstrates our commitment to providing developers with a comprehensive developer support program to facilitate the development of a wide variety of applications that end users can download to their iDEN handsets."
