Symbol Technologies and Extended Systems Form Alliance to Extend Enterprise Data and Applications to Handheld Devices

Extended Systems (Nasdaq:XTND), a leading provider of mobile data management and wireless connectivity products, and Symbol Technologies (NYSE:SBL) have signed a marketing and distribution agreement to offer Extended Systems' server synchronization products to Symbol's corporate customers and software vendors.

Under the agreement, Symbol will immediately begin to resell Extended Systems' XTNDConnect product line to its partners and value-added resellers worldwide.

The XTNDConnect product line enables mobile workers using Symbol's handheld devices to directly access, synchronize and manage enterprise data between Symbol handheld devices and back-end enterprise systems. XTNDConnect products allow developers to easily deploy enterprise applications to a wide range of mobile device platforms over all major wireless and wireline networks. With this capability, software developers can build custom or extend existing applications such as customer resource management (CRM), inventory management, manufacturing and transportation logistics programs to mobile workers.

"Extended Systems completes our synchronization strategy by enabling developers to integrate our Pocket PC and Windows CE handhelds with corporate databases," said Keith Kanneg, senior director for Symbol's Software Marketing Business Unit.

XTNDConnect Server provides support for multiple handheld devices using Palm, Pocket PC, Windows CE and EPOC operating systems. Users can access information remotely, through any wireless or wireline connection. XTNDConnect Server uses Certicom's encryption technology and user authentication to securely transfer information between corporate systems and mobile devices. Custom mobile applications can be built using any ODBC-compliant database such as DB2, Oracle, Sybase and Extended Systems Advantage Database Server.

"Leveraging Symbol's leadership in the mobile and wireless markets allows us to give developers and software vendors a complete solution for extending critical enterprise information anytime, anywhere," said Steve Simpson, CEO and president of Extended Systems. "With XTNDConnect products, Symbol can offer its partners and customers a software platform that meets the needs of the rapidly growing mobile workforce."
