Wavelink Powers Symbol Technologies' GSM Mobile Internet Devices

Wavelink's Software Platform Enables Symbol to Develop Flexible Wireless Applications for Next-Generation GSM Devices

Wavelink Corporation, a wireless platform technology developer that enables enterprises to develop, manage and deploy wireless applications, today announced that Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:SBL) selected the company's software for its GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) handheld devices.

Wavelink's platform provides Symbol with a proven infrastructure to extend and manage mobile Internet applications on the GSM network. The joint GSM initiative continues Wavelink and Symbol's 5-year partnership of delivering to customers innovative and versatile solutions for the wireless enterprise. The two companies will be demonstrating a healthcare application running on a Symbol 2734 PocketPC device at Symbol's booth in Hall 2 Stand H15 at GSM World Congress in Cannes, France, February 20-23, 2001.

Wavelink Studio, the company's unique platform, was chosen by Symbol because its intuitive nature allows enterprises to create robust wireless solutions in any language for deployment on any mobile device. Wavelink's flexible architecture will enable Symbol's European customers to implement intelligent wireless applications over the current 2G GSM network, today, while at the same time preparing them for the migration to next-generation wireless standards. In addition to GSM, Wavelink supported applications can run concurrently over a variety of networks today, including wireless LAN 802.11b, CDPD, GPRS, CDMA and Mobitex, with little or no modifications to the existing code.

"We are excited that our platform was selected by Symbol for their GSM mobile Internet launch," said Robert Whelan, Wavelink's CEO and co-founder. "Working with Symbol on the initial European roll-out of their GSM handheld devices will allow us to further extend our reach in international markets and keeps us poised for domestic adoption."

"Through our relationships with technology partners such as Wavelink, Symbol continues to lead the wireless industry for LAN and WAN mobility solutions. Wavelink's software platform delivers proven, added-value applications and management tools with significant real-world benefits for both mobile operators and end users alike," said John Vaccaro, Vice President, Mobile & Wireless Systems at Symbol Technologies, EMEA Division.
