3G and The Wireless Internet to Drive Wireless Handset and PDA Sales and Services, Allied Business Intelligence Says

The wireless Internet is well on its way to establishing a new market for wireless handsets, PDAs, laptops and other wireless clients, as wireless operators begin to deploy high-speed data services in mobile networks worldwide.

"The wireless handset shipments were not that poor in 2000 and actually met ABI's prediction," said Allied Business Intelligence Inc (ABI) Senior Vice President Larry Swasey, the author of the report. "The wireless handset market could not grow as greatly as many expected, since there were few new services introduced and the wireless handset basically remained a voice tool for the most part. But in 2000 there was still a decent rise in handset shipments."

According to the findings in the new study "Wireless Portable Devices: World Market for 2G, 2.5G and 3G Devices and Connectivity to the Wireless Internet," data-enabled handsets utilizing WAP and i-mode, or a combination of the two, will account for 80% of the handsets shipped in 2006, up from 30% in 2000. Handsets utilizing 2.5G or 3G technology will rise to over half of all handsets shipped in 2006, with WCDMA having the largest share of the group.

Bluetooth will also play a large role in wireless connectivity, with over 90% of all handsets shipped incorporating Bluetooth by 2006. Including Bluetooth will allow wireless clients to access the WAN, LAN and PAN.

"Wireless Portable Devices" analyzes the 2G and 3G wireless handset market, including shipments for WCDMA, GPRS, 1XRTT, EDGE, WAP, i-mode and Bluetooth-enabled wireless thin clients on a regional and world basis. The shipments are set against the growing wireless subscriber base and wireless Internet subscriber base, given by region and air interface in the report. The growing world telematics market is also discussed.

The evolving wireless personal digital assistant, laptop and web pad market is examined, along with a section dedicated to the global movement in the location based services application industry. Another section is dedicated to the power needs of cell phones on 2G and 3G networks. The regional wireline and wireless Internet subscriber base is also dissected. Subscriber counts and handset shipments for WCDMA, GPRS, EDGE and 1XRTT are broken down. Mobile commerce is also detailed by revenue and by region.
