AUDIOVOX COMMUNICATIONS CORP. ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR A CDMA-POWERED PERSONAL DIGITAL ASSISTANT (PDA) CELL PHONE

Integrated CDMA/1X-Ready Wireless Phone and PDA Set to Bow This Fall

Always looking with an eye toward the future, Audiovox Communications Corporation today announced plans to introduce an integrated personal digital assistant (PDA) and wireless phone in the third quarter of this year. This wireless information communicator will be 3G CDMA2000 1X-ready, and will be developed to work with carriers that support this high-speed, enhanced data transfer technology.

The plan is for Audiovox’s personal wireless communication unit to follow the general form of traditional PDAs but with advanced communication features.  The device is expected to offer digital calling capabilities through a hands-free attachment, and should enable consumers to surf the ‘net, jot notes, make calls and even watch streaming video sequences via an unprecedented mobile data transmission speed of up to 144 kpbs, thanks to 3G CDMA-2000 1XRTT technology.

“Timing is crucial,” said Philip Christopher, president and CEO of Audiovox Communications Corporation. “Audiovox is preparing to introduce its combination personal digital assistant and cellular phone just as U.S. carriers will begin to implement 1X technology.  The PDA/phone is the optimal wireless communications tool for consumers to take full advantage of the power of 1X technology.”

Operating on the CDMA/1X, 800Mhz and /or 1.9Ghz frequencies, Audiovox’s slim and light PDA phone will come equipped with an ear piece jack, and will weigh approximately 7 ounces.  The unit will also come with an SD card slot which will enable users to share and store large amounts of data.  With the SD card, the wireless communicator will support 24 MB Flash ROM and 32MB RAM of storage capacity.

Its operating system will take advantage of several sophisticated built-in original software applications.  Users will be able to simultaneously download crisp, quality audio through a built- in MP3 player, and watch streaming video content – from music videos to news reports – on the device’s color screen.

The wireless personal digital communicator will also be quipped with word processing software, and support Short Message Service and Email functions with some attachment capabilities.  The PDA functions will include an address book, schedule and calculator, among others.

The PDA/phone will have  Input/Output ports for USB, Serial, IrDA, a microphone, speaker and mini stereo.  Its rechargeable DC battery will provide 170 hours of standby time, 10 hours of normal use under Standby state, and 2 hours of continuous data communications.  Other accessories will include a stylus, AC adapter, cradle, USB cable, software and documents, and a soft carrying case.
