Ericsson launches Mobile Commerce Platform - enables charging for Mobile Internet services

Ericsson has announced its new Mobile Commerce Platform, which provides a safe and secure solution for operators and service providers to launch their own, revenue-earning mobile commerce services. The new platform will be commercially available in the second quarter of 2001.

A scalable solution that includes modules for access, payment and security, the Mobile Commerce Platform is an important component of the Ericsson Internet Services Platform, the end-to-end service creation and delivery solution designed to help operators and service providers bring Mobile Internet services quickly and cost-effectively to a mass market.

The Mobile Commerce Platform enables network operators and service providers to offer secure payment services for mobile commerce transactions, making it very easy for content providers and application developers to create valuable services for end-users, boosting revenues from transaction commissions and traffic.

"Ericsson is the world leader in m-commerce and has been a leading voice in standardization forums over the last two years," said Lars Boman, President of Ericsson Internet Applications. "Launching this platform is a logical step for us - we are giving our customers a solid foundation for creating new value by offering services to cater for the rapid growth we expect to see in m-commerce worldwide."

An important feature of the Mobile Commerce Platform is that it enables charging for both site content as well as goods and services purchased over the Mobile Internet. This is of particular importance because many Internet companies are beginning to charge for website content and services that were previously free.

To do this, the Mobile Commerce Platform supports Jaldatm - the payment technology that enables micro and session-based payments from both fixed and mobile devices - developed by the Ericsson and Hewlett-Packard joint venture, EHPT.

Mobile Commerce Platform evolved from EHPT's SAFETRADER and Ericsson's Mobile e-Pay, and incorporates their proven security and payment functions. Security functions range from simple password verification, to sophisticated Wireless Public Key Infrastructure (WPKI) protection to enable the completion of high-security payment transactions from a mobile phone - including account balance enquiries, money transfers, billing services and stock trading.

End-users will benefit from secure, personalized and easy-to-use services such as banking, trading, ticketing, shopping, gaming and betting, accessible from any type of fixed or Mobile Internet-enabled device. Additionally, the platform offers an end-user on-line customer service function, mCare, which provides immediate context-sensitive help, and helps Ericsson customers satisfy and retain the loyalty of their users.

The Mobile Commerce Platform solution is ready for General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), the packet-based data bearer service for GSM and TDMA networks that offers 'always on' connectivity to the Mobile Internet. GPRS is being rolled out by operators around the world as the first vital step towards 3G.

Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for this new solution will be downloadable free from the Ericsson Developers Zone: www.ericsson.com/developerszone
