Motorola Licenses Extended Systems' Bluetooth Software for Java 2 Platform -- J2ME --

Motorola Now Able to Add Bluetooth Capability to a Common Programmer's Interface for Java

Extended Systems (Nasdaq:XTND), a leading provider of mobile data management and wireless connectivity solutions, and Motorola's (NYSE:MOT) Semiconductor Products Sector, a leader in the wireless communications industry, today announced that Extended Systems will license XTNDAccess Blue SDK to Motorola, to support Bluetooth connectivity in the Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) for wireless communication devices.

The J2ME is an application programmer's interface (API), which will enable third party developers to write Java applications for devices that utilize Bluetooth. Extended Systems' software development kit implements Bluetooth wireless protocols for embedded devices such as cellular phones, PDAs, digital cameras, portable office equipment, industrial automation products and more.

Motorola chairs the expert group charged with writing the specification for a common Java/Bluetooth API standard, under the Java Specification Request (JSR82). Extended Systems is a member of the 15 company expert group formed in November 2000. This group will define the API and submit it for approval to the executive committee at Sun.

"By working with Extended Systems, Motorola is expanding its portfolio of Bluetooth products for its customers. With this agreement, customers can integrate Java software running on handheld devices with Bluetooth compliant hardware," said Anne-Marie Larkin, vice president and director of Motorola's Wireless Software Applications and Services Division.

"By integrating our Bluetooth stack with Java, Extended Systems and Motorola bring two important technologies together," said Steve Simpson, president and CEO of Extended Systems. "We look forward to working with Motorola to add Bluetooth functionality to Java applications on cell phones and other next-generation products."
