NextBus Announces WAP Alerts

NextBus Information Systems announced today a new premium service for wireless phone users at CTIA 2001. The new application will provide alerts to NextBus users, notifying them when their transit vehicle will arrive. Passengers select a number of minutes, and NextBus will send an automatic alert signal to the WAP wireless device. The alert informs the user when their transit vehicle is the indicated number of minutes away from their selected stop.

The new service enhances the initial NextBus wireless application. Instead of repeatedly requesting arrival times, the user simply sets the alert for the number of minutes warning he/she wants before the bus will arrive. NextBus then sends the alert at the appropriate time. With only two easy steps, additional convenience is brought to the wireless space. Content is "pushed" rather than "pulled" from the wireless web, putting more time back in the hands of the user.

The new service works to make the NextBus mission of "Passenger Information Everywhere" an actuality. NextBus CEO Jim Maresca says the new alerts are part of the NextBus program. "We want to make using public transportation as easy and convenient as it can be. The WAP alerts simplify getting NextBus information where and when it's needed."

NextBus is currently negotiating with carriers to provide the new WAP alerts as a paid premium service. An announcement regarding carrier affiliation is expected shortly.
