Nortel Networks, Novatel Wireless to Deliver Wireless Internet Services, Applications

Joint Marketing, Development Alliance to Offer Advanced IP, Mobile Office Capabilities

LAS VEGAS – Nortel Networks* [NYSE/TSE: NT] and Novatel Wireless [NASDAQ: NVTL], a provider of wireless data communications access solutions, announced today at CTIA Wireless 2001 a non-exclusive global agreement to jointly develop and market solutions featuring Wireless Internet infrastructure equipment from Nortel Networks and Novatel Wireless access products.

Under terms of the agreement, the companies will jointly develop and promote 2.5G and 3G wireless solutions to help service providers quickly and efficiently deliver the high-performance Wireless Internet. Joint solutions will utilize Novatel Wireless PC Cards, cradle devices and OEM modules for GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) and cdma2000* 1XRTT standards.

Jointly developed applications are expected to provide high-bandwidth wireless access to high-speed corporate networks from laptop computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and other mobile devices. The companies will seek to enhance wireless access to enterprise data and applications, and to better integrate mobile users into corporate networks.

“By combining Nortel Networks wireless infrastructure expertise with Novatel’s knowledge in the device and IP (Internet Protocol) appliance market, we’re laying a foundation for next generation Wireless Internet services,” said Peter MacKinnon, vice president and general manager, Applications and Devices, Nortel Networks.

“Together, we can help create new revenue opportunities for service providers, and enable quick and efficient deployment of advanced IP services to businesses and consumers,” MacKinnon said.

Bundled Nortel Networks/Novatel solutions will be designed to speed delivery of 2.5 and 3G wireless data services for service providers, and to provide value-added, differentiated services that can help generate new revenues. General availability is expected in the second half of this year.
