GDC
– San Jose, March 2001:
Not a Number BV (NaN), creator of the powerful Blender™
3D creation software, and UK games
content channel,
nGame, have announced a roadmap to develop players and persistent 3D servers for
mobile gaming on GPRS and UMTS color mobile devices.
Having
already made major inroads into the traditional computer and videogames market,
Not a Number (NaN), through its 3D enabling Blender technology will now leverage
the small footprint and versatility of Blender 3D creation freeware to provide a
complete solution for development and deployment of games and other applications
for the rapidly growing userbase of mobile, internet-enabled devices.
As part of the new alliance, NaN and
nGame will work together to develop content players for a variety of mobile
devices. The first planned release is scheduled to be a 2D player for GPRS
handhelds, with the aim of establishing a standard interface and delivery system
for gaming on all handheld devices. This will be followed by client/server
technologies enabling a new generation of 3D content on the first generation of
GPRS devices.
As a member of the Ericsson Mobile
Application Initiative, NaN is already committed to the development of Blender
technology for 3D interactive players on UMTS, GPRS and Bluetooth-enabled mobile
devices.
NGame,
leader in WAP-based games including the BAFTA nominated Merchant Princes, has
recently announced its intention to expand upon its current portfolio to create
true multi-platform interactive entertainment. The
partnership with NaN will give them access to Blender’s 3D game creation and
delivery system for PCs, next generation consoles and a full range of hand-held
devices.
NaN
CEO, Ian Ginn, commented:
“One
of Blender’s unique characteristics is its multi-platform availability. The
power of our software, packed into such a small footprint, makes it ideal for
mobile devices. Combining our ability to create a delivery system for handhelds
with nGame’s content development skills and the widespread deployment of the
nGame channel, is a great base from which to create a full games channel
solution for mobiles.”
John Brimacombe, CEO of nGame, said:
“As a content developer, distributor and games server technology provider, multi-platform capabilities are very important in meeting the challenges of a convergent media future. Effective technologies create the foundation on which creative teams, such as our production studio, can build the next evolution of interactive entertainment. In Blender we see a great opportunity for working with a market-leading system.”
