Office Depot Enhances Customer Service with Wireless Mobile Computing Delivery Tracking System

Aether Systems and Symbol Technologies Power "Real Time" Wireless Mobile Computing System For Office Depot's Delivery Truck Fleet

Office Depot, Inc. (NYSE:ODP), the world's largest supplier of office products, today announced its rollout of a wireless mobile computing transportation and logistics system to Office Depot's fleet of more than 2,000 delivery trucks powered by Aether Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:AETH) and Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:SBL).

"Fanatical customer service is our number one priority," said Dennis Andruskiewicz, Senior Vice President of Distribution for Office Depot. "The implementation of this real-time delivery and tracking system allows us to provide and ensure that our customers get the products they want, when they want them and our drivers can resolve any customer issue more efficiently and accurately."

Office Depot will utilize Symbol's SPT 1700 Palm O/S handheld computing devices and its Mobile Gateway on-board data transaction systems for its new wireless proof of delivery and package tracking system. The program, powered by Aether's wireless software and applications has been rolled out in Atlanta, Georgia; Baltimore, Maryland; Cincinnati, Ohio; Dallas and Houston, Texas; Detroit, Michigan; Orlando and Weston, Florida and Signal Hill, California with plans to roll out nationally in Office Depot's truck fleet in a total of 20 markets by the end of the fiscal year.

"The Office Depot rollout is an example of the new "empowered" mobile work force, a global trend now emerging in retail and other industries," said Tomo Razmilovic, president and CEO, Symbol Technologies. "Office Depot workers, equipped with Symbol handheld computers and in-truck computers, have the latest information no matter where they are."

The new wireless system, called the Office Depot Signature Tracking and Reporting System (OD S.T.A.R.), was developed and implemented in conjunction with Aether's Transportation and Logistics division in order to enhance customer service through delivery management and tracking of Office Depot's 100,000 daily shipments. Drivers will use handheld computers to verify what items are on each truck, capture the customer's signature to complete the transaction and reconcile inventory.

"This project illustrates how the power of wireless technology can truly improve the performance of a company and have a positive impact on its bottom line," said George Davis, president of Aether Systems. "Wireless products are tailor-made for the logistics industry and Office Depot, an industry leader with a vast inventory to track and manage, is a perfect client to benefit from Aether's wireless solutions."
