Sierra Wireless Signs R&D Agreement with TELUS Mobility to Develop Next-Generation CDMA Modems

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ:SWIR)(TSE:SW.) today announced an agreement with TELUS Mobility for the development of a next-generation CDMA Type II PC card for use in laptops and handheld devices such as personal data assistants and handheld devices.

The new PC card being developed will provide for voice and data communications up to 144 kilobits per second (kbps) - a ten-fold increase over CDMA PC cards that are currently available.

"We are pleased to have TELUS Mobility's support in the research and development of next-generation CDMA technology," said Norman Toms, Chief Technical Officer, Sierra Wireless. "This agreement not only enhances our ability to accelerate the development of wireless solutions for next-generation networks, but also provides access to valuable human and technological resources within TELUS Mobility."

TELUS Mobility has a long-standing relationship with Sierra Wireless that includes field trials and the commercial launch of their first-generation CDMA and CDPD wireless modems. CDMA, Code Division Multiple Access, is a "spread spectrum" technology, which means that it spreads the information contained in a particular signal of interest over a much greater bandwidth than the original signal. Benefits of CDMA technology include improved call quality, enhanced privacy, increased talk time and bandwidth on demand. This technology will also provide TELUS Mobility with migration capability to third generation, or 3G, technology.

"We are proud to further expand our R&D initiatives with Sierra Wireless, an innovator in the wireless solutions space," said Scott McArthur, Director of Technology Development at TELUS Mobility. "This next-generation PC card will allow TELUS Mobility to deliver superior solutions to our customers as we evolve our network to third generation wireless, or 3G, technology. An increase in the data rate by up to tenfold will significantly increase the value of the wireless Internet and wireless connectivity to corporate databases, intranets and multimedia applications."
