New 'Dial-Out' Feature for Ricochet Provides Easy Wireless Remote Access to Corporate Networks

Increased Remote Performance Now Available Via Secure, Wireless Dial-Out to Private Networks Across Standard Remote Access Telephone Connections

Metricom, Inc. (Nasdaq:MCOM), a leading high-speed wireless data company, today announced the availability of Ricochet(R) Dial-Out, a new value-added feature that allows fast, easy access to corporate networks via a standard dial-up connection while eliminating the need to be tethered to a wall.

Ricochet is the fastest mobile access available today, giving users the freedom to connect wirelessly to the Internet, their Intranets, streaming multimedia content, and mission-critical enterprise files and applications any time from any location under coverage. Now more Ricochet users than ever can take their office connections with them and enjoy high-speed access to their corporate networks while on the road, at a client meeting, or anywhere being connected is important.

Ricochet Dial-Out creates an alternative means of remote access to corporate networks for enterprises without Virtual Private Networks. Ricochet Dial-Out allows employees to wirelessly connect via a telephone number just as they would through a landline. Ricochet 128 kbps wireless mobile access enables an unprecedented level of productivity and freedom by allowing users to wirelessly replicate the complete desktop experience. With the new Ricochet Dial-Out capability, subscribers can retrieve critical files and applications exactly as they would through a standard telephone dial-up connection while gaining the added benefit of high-speed untethered mobility.

"In the enterprise today, knowledge workers require unrestricted access to information on the Internet and corporate networks in order to maintain a competitive edge," said Metricom Senior Vice President of Sales John Wernke. "Speed and mobility are paramount, and Ricochet uniquely offers the best of both worlds in one wireless solution. Furthermore, Ricochet Dial-Out answers the need for a simple, seamless connection between people and their corporate information."

More than two thirds of enterprises today use telephone modem dial-up for remote access. Ricochet Dial-Out provides wireless mobile access to existing telephone-modem pools without additional software or infrastructure by allowing users to make a phone call out of the Ricochet network to the Public Switched Telephone Network. The call is simply like dialing into a corporate network through a 56 kbps modem plugged into a wall except it is all done wirelessly over the Ricochet high-speed data network. Additionally, since Ricochet Dial-Out is a standard remote access connection, it provides the same level of security as a landline connection to the corporate network.

Ricochet Dial-Out is available today as a value-added feature in all 15 Ricochet markets. Current and new Ricochet subscribers can use Dial-Out on Ricochet GS and GT modems as well as the Novatel Merlin for Ricochet PC card modem. Ricochet Dial-Out is currently available through Wireless WebConnect!, a Ricochet Reseller Partner, at an additional monthly fee of $9.95.

Ricochet Dial-Out details:

-- Supports toll-free 800, 888, 877, 866 and 855 prefix numbers
