Merlin(TM) Wireless PC Cards and Minstrel V(TM) Receive ThinkPad and WorkPad Proven Certification

Novatel Wireless, Inc. (Nasdaq:NVTL), a provider of wireless data access solutions, today announced the first wireless WAN ThinkPad and WorkPad Proven certifications for the Merlin CDPD Wireless PC Card Modem, Merlin Ricochet 128 kbps Wireless PC Card Modem, and the Minstrel V(TM) CDPD Wireless Handheld Modem. The ThinkPad Proven and WorkPad Proven program certification process requires the manufacturer to conduct product testing and certify its compliance with ThinkPad and WorkPad compatibility standards. Novatel Wireless' new Minstrel m500(TM) is also currently undergoing WorkPad Proven certification in an effort to offer a wireless solution for IBM's new WorkPad c500 & c505 PC companions.

"Collaborating with manufacturers such as Novatel Wireless, IBM opens the door to a wider variety of products and services that enhance the ThinkPad and WorkPad mobile computing experience," said Rick McGee, vice president of marketing, IBM Personal Device Brands. "By combining our strengths in mobile computing with Novatel Wireless' strengths in wireless technologies, our two companies together can provide even more leading-edge solutions for our customers."

"IBM is well-positioned to build upon its mobile computing experience to help existing customers take advantage of the new features and benefits of our wireless technologies. ThinkPads and WorkPads are the perfect vehicle with which to deliver on our ongoing strategy to provide customers with complete wireless data access solutions," said Brad Weinert, vice president, product management for Novatel Wireless. "IBM is a worldwide industry leader for computing platforms and we are 100 percent committed to maintaining and growing our leadership as a critical component of providing wireless solutions to our global partners."

Merlin CDPD is a Type II PC card with its own IP address that connects to the Internet via the Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) network. The Merlin Ricochet 128 kbps is a Type II PC card that runs on the Ricochet high-speed wireless data network. Both Merlin modems will enable IBM's ThinkPad users to wirelessly access individual and corporate email and the Internet. Both modems are compatible with MAC(R) OS 9.0 and higher as well as Windows(R) 95/98/NT/CE/2000 and Pocket PC.

The Minstrel V and the Minstrel m500 will enhance the functionality of the IBM WorkPad family by enabling access to email, corporate databases and the Internet utilizing Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) technology. Both Minstrel modems support popular enterprise productivity and synchronization programs written for the Palm OS. The sleek design of the Minstrel modem retains the elegance and portability of the WorkPad handheld computer.
