Seiko Instruments' New SmartPad2 Extends Benefits to Users of Palm, Handspring, Sony Clio and TGR Pro Organizers

SmartPad2 Enables Users to Automatically Transfer Notes & Drawings To All Palm OS Handheld Organizers

Seiko Instruments USA Inc., a developer and marketer of advanced business and home/office products, today announced the launch of SmartPad2. Building on the success of the original SmartPad, SmartPad2 extends the benefits of the original SmartPad to Handspring(R), Sony Clio(R), TGR Pro(R), Palm(R)and IBM Workpad C3(R)personal organizers. With SmartPad2, handwritten notes and drawings are instantly transferred from paper to a handheld organizer via infrared port.

"We enjoyed phenomenal sell-through with the original SmartPad since it was introduced last summer," said Mike Del Vecchio, General Manager of Sales and Marketing for Seiko Instruments' Business & Home/Office Products Division. "We expect 2001 sales to be very strong, since SmartPad 2's benefits can be enjoyed by anybody using a PDA running the Palm Operating System."

Product Enhancements

SmartPad2 users can view their handwritten notes on their organizer, store them, organize them, and even e-mail them directly from their desktop or from their organizer via compatible modem or Web enabled cellular phone.

The SmartPad2 improves on the original with the inclusion of the following new options and features:

-- Addition of a QWERTY keypad that is imprinted on the bottom of the digitizer tablet. Nearly 250 percent larger than the traditional Palm keypad and is, subsequently, much easier to operate, this allows users to tap keys and have data entered into their organizer as text (not as graphic files).

-- A new modular design allows users to customize portions of the portfolio.

The SmartPad2 is a sleek, easy-to-carry note pad portfolio, measuring 7.25"H x 10.5 W x 1.5"D, with space for a standard 5 x 8 note pad and a hand-held organizer. As users write on the notepad with the SmartPad pen (included), their notes and drawings are instantly transferred to the handheld organizer. Notes can then be copied to a notebook or desktop PC via the HotSync(R)operation. Once saved on a computer, notes and drawings can be viewed, printed, or attached to e-mail messages as .GIF files.

The SmartPad2, which is powered by two AAA alkaline batteries (included), is compatible with the Palm III series or later models, the Handspring Visor, Visor Deluxe, Visor Platinum, Visor Prism, Sony Clio, IBM WorkPad(R)and TGR Pro. System requirements include an IBM-compatible Pentium(R)or faster computer running Windows(R)95 or later, 16 MB RAM minimum, 16 MB of available hard disk space, and a CD-ROM drive. The SmartPen includes two ink refill cartridges with replacements available from Seiko Instruments' Web site. One 5" x 8" notepad is included in the SmartPad package as well. Seiko Instruments' SmartPad2 will ship in June at an estimated street price of $199.
