SRI International Licenses Powerful InCON Wireless Technology to Extendea

Company Obtains Option to Use SRI's Wireless Communications Platform for Management Applications in Transportation and Logistics Industries

Extendea, Inc., a developer of wireless-based software for transportation and logistics companies, has received an option to obtain field-of-use rights to an advanced wireless technology developed by SRI International, a leading research institute based in Silicon Valley. With the exercise of the option, SRI becomes an equity holder of Extendea.

This wireless technology platform, which uses components of SRI's InCON(R) command and control systems developed for the U.S. military, will further Extendea's creation of differentiated, innovative supply chain products for the transportation and logistics industries. It is expected that SRI's technology will allow Extendea to offer its customers greater levels of fleet management efficiency, enhanced visibility into the supply chain, more rapid deployments, and faster time-to-benefit realization.

Extendea CEO Jorge Fuenzalida says this option to enter into a licensing agreement with SRI is an important development in his company's efforts to move products to market quickly. "SRI International is a leader in developing advanced technologies, including wireless communication systems," Fuenzalida said. "By licensing this technology from SRI, we will be able to offer our customers greater levels of reliability and value."

Extendea Uses InCON to Bring Military-Class Efficiency to Transportation Fleets

InCON technology forms the nucleus of Extendea's Java-based platform, allowing the company to develop leading-edge wireless applications rapidly. Through its InCON license, Extendea can offer low-cost fleet management and supply chain visibility solutions through a highly reliable, rapidly deployable wireless architecture.

Some benefits of the technology include:

-- Reliability: Offers the assurance of a 100% Java-based technology that has been tested by the U.S. military

-- Efficiency: Enables transportation companies to maximize resources by deploying fewer trucks and allowing existing trucks to spend less time and fewer miles on the road

-- Flexibility: Extends the life of a customer's fleet management investments by providing a modular set of applications that integrate into existing systems, simplifying upgrades

-- Ubiquity: Takes wireless-based, GPS-ready software to lower

price levels and a wider array of devices, allowing Extendea to pervasively deploy its value-added fleet management technology

-- Quality: Offers Extendea's customers the prospect of increased reliability and predictability for deliveries and service

"In keeping with SRI's mission to bring the results of our innovative research into the marketplace, we believe licensing this wireless technology to Extendea will enable them to better solve the complex problems facing transportation and logistics companies," said Scott Seaton, business development director at SRI International. "By creatively utilizing components of the InCON command and control system, Extendea will be able to deliver a differentiated and novel product to its customers."

Extendea's wireless applications provide transportation and logistics customers with real-time information from multiple stages of the supply chain. According to analysts, this is a market segment traditionally underserved by wireless software providers and is potentially a $10 billion market by 2005. Extendea's interactive fleet management wireless solutions include: asset and inventory tracking, mapping, scheduling, messaging, reporting, and mobile commerce.
