Alchemy Semiconductor Announces Reference Design to Enable New High Performance Mobile Client Devices

Joint Agreements with Dow Chemical and Stellcom Showcase Market Leader Strengths in Device Development

Alchemy Semiconductor, Inc.(TM), an Austin-based fabless semiconductor company targeting the Internet Edge Device market, today announced their Mobile Client Device Reference Design based on collaboration agreements with DOW Chemical and Stellcom Inc. The agreement calls for Dow Chemical to provide design, engineering, prototyping and advanced materials to develop an innovative device enclosure. Stellcom is providing the board layout and design for the mobile client device.

The intent of the platform is to provide manufacturers a blueprint for developing a new high performance mobile client device platform, such as PDA's, web pads and hand-held gaming devices. The distinctive platform is designed to provide rapid product development and introduction utilizing Alchemy's Au1000(TM), taking advantage of the microprocessor's availability as being first to market in its power and performance class. The Au1000 is a MIPS32(TM)-based (NASDAQ: MIPS) system-on-chip (SOC) that is highly integrated with on-chip memory controllers and Internet access peripherals.

The Alchemy reference design is a high performance, low power handheld mobile platform providing personal information management (PIM), wireless Internet connectivity, and a variety of multimedia features in a compact and highly stylized form factor that has been ergonomically designed to enhance portability. Based on the Au1000 operating from 266 MHz to 400 MHz, the device also features: complete memory subsystem; full VGA LCD panel with an approximate 4-inch diagonal viewing area; rechargeable battery; integrated Bluetooth 1.1 baseband controller and radio; Compact Flash interface; integrated speaker; microphone; and, headset jack.

"This Mobile Client Device Reference Design is a unique and visionary platform that will minimize overall development costs for our customers," said Jim Moore, Alchemy Semiconductor CEO. "As an experienced design and development team, we're very aware of the competitive landscape of our customers, and the joint agreement with two innovative leaders in development of this reference design is another facet of the Alchemy integrated solution, and demonstrates the leadership of the participating companies."

Moore noted that the design also creates a novel platform for application developers, enabling new and unique applications that require high performance computing at low power.

Dow developed the cutting-edge, ergonomic form factor of the reference design specific to their vision of a device optimized to take advantage of the Au1000's scalability, high performance, power dissipation and high integration qualities.

"Alchemy has provided us with a `win-win' opportunity to globally showcase our innovative enclosure development capabilities to leading OEMs," said Karen Fennessy-Ketola, Dow Business Development Manager. "The reference design represents an overall innovation in PIM, from the look and feel on the outside, to the power and performance inside."

Stellcom is a wireless systems integration firm with experience in Bluetooth, portable devices, and LCD and battery integration, and provided engineering and device services for the mobile client device reference design.

"Stellcom has been working to stake a leading position in the wireless integration field - particularly on the device and appliance side," said Tracy Trent, CEO of Stellcom. "Being selected by a company such as Alchemy Semiconductor - another integration expert -underscores the recognition we have gained with other technology innovators."
