Comverse Demonstrates Picture Messaging Solution For Java Technology Based Handsets At Supercomm

Comverse To Develop Advanced Enhanced Services For Java Technology Based Mobile Terminals; Visit Comverse At Booth No. 4426 At The SUPERCOMM Show In Atlanta, Georgia From June 5-7

Comverse, a unit of Comverse Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: CMVT), and the world's leading supplier of software and systems enabling network-based multimedia enhanced communications services, today announced that it will demonstrate its Picture Messaging solution using Java(TM) technology for mobile devices in the Comverse booth (No. 4426) at Supercomm in Atlanta, June 5-7, 2001.

Picture Messaging is an advanced application that runs on the Java platform for mobile devices to enable true multimedia on today's 2G networks. This application allows mobile subscribers to create, send, and forward full-color visual messages, from a mobile device, such as a mobile phone or a PDA to another mobile device. Picture messages are stored in Comverse's industry-leading multimedia messaging platform and then sent to a list of addressees defined by the subscriber. The Java technology for mobile devices technology permits the display of these pictures in high resolution on Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME (TM)) technology-enabled handsets. This application extends Comverse's already rich portfolio of enhanced services, which includes voice, fax, email, short messaging, and streaming video.

"We are very excited to see Comverse, a leader in the mobile messaging market, embrace J2ME technology," said Nancy Yavne, General Manager of Sun's Mobile Java Development Center. "They bring an in-depth knowledge of the telecommunications industry, along with a dynamic portfolio of cutting-edge mobile applications which can significantly leverage the handset enhancements we are building through Java technology for mobile devices."

Comverse's Picture Messaging application leverages the programmable application environment provided by Sun's J2ME technology for mobile terminal manufacturers. As part of this development, Comverse has joined Sun's Java Community Process (SM) program (JCP), an open community process through which new Java technologies are defined (http://java.sun.com/jcp/). All major handset manufacturers, including Fujitsu, Matsushita (Panasonic), Mitsubishi, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, RIM, Sharp, and Sony have announced support for Java technology.

Menashe Rothschild, Chief Technology Officer of Comverse, stated "Comverse is committed to working with handset technology partners such as Sun to enrich its enhanced services offering. By combining innovative solutions such as J2ME with Comverse's scalable and carrier-grade network-based platforms, we can help operators deliver exciting new revenue-generating services to their customers."

Comverse's combination of its multimedia services and platform with Sun's J2ME technology to create the Picture Messaging application demonstrates its commitment to partner with industry leaders to develop advanced applications. Comverse formed its Spark Alliance Program earlier this year to facilitate these partnerships.
