Ericsson has been selected as the principal supplier for Hutchison Telecoms' 3G network in Australia. The contract price is approximately USD 435 million (AUD 830 million) and is Ericsson's first 3G contract in Australasia and 32 WCDMA commercial agreement so far for Ericsson globally.

Ericsson will provide a 3G network including radio access network, IP core network and transmission technologies. Also included are advanced network management systems, network operations, mobile Internet application platforms and terminals. Motorola will provide its radio access network (RAN) in the Sydney and Brisbane license areas.

The network will be rolled out for a staged commercial launch end 2002 early 2003.

"Hutchison is a global leader in 3G, with licenses covering over 170 million people worldwide," said Mr. Canning Fok, Chairman of Hutchison Telecommunications (Australia) Ltd. and Group Managing Director of Hutchison Whampoa. "We are very confident that 3G will revolutionize the way people live with the introduction of new, powerful and exciting services. As always, Hutchison is fully behind HTAL."

"Partnering with Ericsson and Motorola in Australia ensures we have the synergies and technological strength to build our network in the fastest and most capital and cost efficient way. This then allows us to bring globally competitive products and services to market of the highest quality and in a timely manner", said Canning.
