Motorola's (NYSE: MOT) Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS) has signed a $22.5 million contract with Kuwait's Mobile Telecommunications Co. (MTC) to expand its nationwide Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) network and to conduct the country's first General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) trial.
The network expansion will allow MTC to add 150,000 new subscribers to its existing network. Both the expansion project and the GPRS trial are scheduled for completion by early 2002. Commercial deployment of GPRS data solutions can begin following the trial period.
Motorola's GTSS will integrate its market-leading Horizon Systems GSM infrastructure solution in the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz spectrums. MTC's dual band network has been operational since September 1999.
"We are very excited about the GPRS trial and subsequent commercial deployment of packet data services on our nationwide network," said Engr Salman Y. Al Roumi, MTC's chairman and managing director. "Motorola is a proven leader in GPRS solutions and we believe they offer us a seamless migration to the next generation of telecommunications products and services," said Roumi.
"Motorola has supplied MTC with the GSM infrastructure since 1994, and we continue to work with MTC on the latest technological solutions that will optimize its system in order to gain an ever- increasing subscriber base in Kuwait's wireless market," said Jeff Cherif, Motorola's Middle East regional manager for GTSS.
