Abaco, Citrix Systems, Extended Systems, Odyssey Software, PenRight!, WaveLink Develop Applications Around Symbol Devices for Growing Mobile Workforce

Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: SBL) announced today that leading enterprise and vertical market software providers now offer a wide range of mobile computing solutions based on its second generation of rugged and durable Microsoft Pocket PC-based handheld computers.

Symbol Technologies software partners, Abaco, Citrix Systems, Extended Systems, Odyssey Software, PenRight! and WaveLink have all developed solutions around the rugged and durable Symbol PPT 2800 handheld computer family, which delivers enhanced performance for the expanding mobile workforce.

Symbol announced earlier in the week its second generation of Pocket PC-based handheld computers with enhanced performance and capabilities. The device features bar code scanning and wireless local area networking (WLAN) or wireless wide area (WWAN) connectivity, empowering mobile workers to execute jobs quickly and efficiently. Highly rugged, it enables the power of Pocket PC to perform even in the most challenging environments.

The PPT 2800 is the second handheld computer based on the Microsoft Pocket PC platform introduced in less than a month. Symbol announced the PDT 8100, a unique Pocket PC device that features keypad and pen input for maximum data entry efficiency in different application environments. The PDT 8100 offers both WWAN and WLAN communications, and advanced bar code scanning.

"The bar has been raised for today's mobile workforce. The most demanding Abaco customers require memory-intense enterprise applications, like field service and field sales, that can operate in disconnected mode," said Fernando Alvarez, Abaco Executive Chairman and Founder. "The Symbol PPT 2800 device, combining the speed of the StrongArm processor, the power of the Pocket PC operating system and the ruggedness of the Symbol design, is optimized for these scenarios. We have had excellent results in testing our mobile enterprise framework, Abaco's latest generation of mobile software, on the device, and expect it to make an impact on the mobile enterprise market."

"The introduction of Symbol's next generation handheld computers represents a step towards our vision of a virtual workplace." said Chris Phoenix, vice president, general manager, embedded solutions and wireless for Citrix Systems, Inc. "Customers can use Symbol's solutions, enabled by our Independent Computing Architecture (ICA), to access information over any network connection at any time."

"The Symbol PPT 2800 is the ideal mobile computing device for the enterprise market. Extended Systems continues to strengthen its alliances by working with Symbol to provide synchronization and mobile data management solutions," said Steve Simpson, CEO and president of Extended Systems. "Our technology enables Symbol customers to integrate Pocket PC devices and other handheld device platforms into the enterprise."

"Symbol's powerful new PPT 2800 rugged Pocket PC is perfectly suited for mobile applications powered by our leading mobile enterprise infrastructure products, CEfusion and ViaXML," said Mark Gentile, president and CEO of Odyssey Software. "Corporations today seek mobile solutions that deliver solid return on investment. The combination of Symbol's new, high-speed rugged Pocket PCs with our open standards-based data access infrastructure and developer tools, delivers the mobile platform that solution providers and corporations need: effective mobile computing with access to information that empowers decisions at the point of activity."

"Symbol's enhanced PPT 2800 Series provides PenRight!'s community of vertical application developers with the ideal, all-in-one, lightweight, rugged mobile computer for deploying custom enterprise solutions." said Chris Temple, director of sales and marketing for PenRight!, manufacturer of MobileBuilder, a leading pen-based rapid application development tool. "We anticipate the majority of PenRight!'s VARs, ISVs, system integrators and corporate developers will target the Symbol PPT 2800 for deploying their next generation wireless and mobile data collection solutions across all vertical market segments."

"Wavelink is excited to support Symbol's newest Pocket PC device with our leading enterprise application development server and client-side software built specifically to maximize the PDT 2800's capabilities," said Robert Whelan, president and CEO of WaveLink. "We believe the Symbol PPT 2800 is the right product for our customer base. Customers should be looking forward to being able to deploy higher performing wireless applications, with faster processing speeds, in addition to all the advantages of the Pocket PC platform."

Symbol also provides enterprise-level software and services expertise in planning, developing, implementing and supporting Pocket PC-based solutions for mobile computing and wireless networking through its SymbolCare(R) Services organization. This enables customers to source Symbol as a single provider for large-scale wireless mobile computing implementations.
