Magnetek previews mobile service management solution co-developed with nokia

Digital power products maker Magnetek, Inc. (NYSE: MAG) today unveiled a remote, wireless monitoring and control solution for telecom networks at SUPERCOMM 2001, being held in the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, GA, June 4-7. The Company is exhibiting in Booth 6536 at the show. The Mobile Service Management (MSM)(TM) solution, co-developed with Nokia, lets telecom network operators monitor and control their systems remotely via mobile phone, giving them 24-7 command of their networks from the field for unprecedented network reliability and availability. The MSM solution consists of four main elements: MagneTek power controllers and digital rectifiers, engineered for superior performance in Telecom applications worldwide by the Company's Power Electronics Group (PEG), Valdarno, Italy. An Internet link and/or LAN, which can be part of the operator's network or connected to it via wireless modem.

For enhanced security, MagneTek also offers a Virtual Private Network (VPN) solution. An Administrative Interface, which allows the network operator to use a PC with Windows® browser-based software to remotely control and monitor the complete system or any part of it. A Wireless Interface, including MagneTeks MSM Server(TM) and Nokias Activ Server(TM) software packages, both of which can be installed on any Windows NT/2000 PC or Server. Magnetek's MSM Server is the heart of the solution. It checks power controller status at pre-programmed intervals set by the network Administrator. System software is programmed in Java® and based on the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) standard. Use of the WAP standard has several advantages: Since it is a communications protocol in an application environment, it allows MagneTek's MSM system to support a variety of digital handheld devices, including mobile phones, pagers, two-way radios, smart phones and communicators. Since it is supported by many operating systems, it provides interoperability even between different device families. Since it is designed to work with most wireless networks, it is applicable in America, Europe and many other parts of the world. Nokia's Activ Server is the WAP gateway.

It sends system alerts through MSM and handles communications from the handheld devices to Magnetek's MSM Server. It also provides the first level of system security. Using a mobile phone or other wireless device, the network operator defines and stores network gateway log-on data (phone number, IP address, username and password). It is then possible to access and connect to Magnetek's MSM Server remotely. As a second level of security, Nokia Activ Server encrypts communications between itself and the handheld device. Once connected to Magnetek's MSM Server, the operator can check and change network parameters at the same user level as the Administrator interface -- any time, no matter where he/she may be. In addition, the MSM system sends status reports and alerts to the operator in the field should network problems arise.

MagneTek's MSM Server was developed in conjunction with the Danish software and CRM-solutions firm GoPinocchio, incorporating the latest in wireless technology. GoPinocchio is a strategic partner of IBM, Microsoft and Nokia. The Mobile Service Management system is available in North America through Magnetek's J-Tec Communication Service division. Based in Greenville, OH, J-Tec provides turnkey DC power systems to 10,000-Amps and serves as a single-source for nationwide telecom power system Engineering, Furnishing and Installation (EF&I), eliminating the need for multiple EF&I vendors.
