Metrowerks Unveils a Host of Wireless Development Tools at JavaOne Conference

Company To Provide Consistent, Java(TM) Technology-Based Tool Sets For Wireless Device and Smart Card Development

Metrowerks outlined today an array of new Java(TM) technology development tools targeting everything from phones and handheld computers to smart cards. Among the new Java technology-based products and technologies Metrowerks is announcing this week are CodeWarrior® for Wireless: Java Development Kit (JDK), and CodeWarrior for Wireless, Java Edition, both designed specifically for wireless application development using Java technology. "Metrowerks' ongoing efforts to support the latest Java APIs is translating into a powerful set of tools that all Java application developers should look at," said Curtis Sasaki, director, technology and evangelism marketing, Sun Microsystems. "Combined with its expertise in the consumer and embedded market, Metrowerks tools allow developers to write compelling applications for any device, whether it is a Java Card-enabled smart card, a mobile phone running CLDC/MIDP, or communicators powered by PersonalJava(TM)." Metrowerks' Java technology-based tools are built from the ground up to support Sun Microsystems' Java(TM) 2 Micro Edition (J2ME), unlike many competing products that were designed for the server and then modified for the wireless space. "Metrowerks' goal is to deliver Java technology-based wireless development tools that work seamlessly across multiple devices, so developers can get their products from concept to deployment more quickly and efficiently, with less training required," said John Smolucha, vice president of marketing, Metrowerks. "Furthermore, we plan to enable programmers to address the convergence of markets with tools that allow for the deployment of wireless applications and content across markets such as transportation, networking and gaming."

CodeWarrior for Wireless: Java Development Kit Metrowerks is working directly with hardware manufacturers to allow developers to specifically target the leading Java-enabled wireless devices on the market. As a result, the company is making available the CodeWarrior for Wireless: Java Development Kit (JDK), which ships with the target hardware in the box. The first JDKs include either the Motorola Accompli A6288 phone or the iDEN i85s phone. JDKs from other leading handset and Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) manufacturers will follow. Designed for fast set-up and installation, the JDKs include CodeWarrior software development tools, complete documentation, a Metrowerks t-shirt, all the necessary power supplies, plug adapters and cables, and one phone. The CodeWarrior for Wireless JDK for the iDEN i85s phone is available now. The JDK for the Motorola Accompli A6288 phone will be available July 31, 2001. Both JDKs are priced at USD$1499 MSRP (U.S. manufacturer suggested retail price), and USD$1099 MSRP for users of CodeWarrior for Java, Version 6.0.

The tools are hosted on Windows and Macintosh. CodeWarrior for Wireless, Java Edition Expected to ship in August 2001, CodeWarrior for Wireless, Java Edition, will include a wealth of integrated features in a single package, so developers spend less time piecing together and testing various components. CodeWarrior for Wireless, Java Edition, includes all of the features and functionality currently available in CodeWarrior for Java, Version 6.0. This includes support for Sun's PersonalJava(TM)and Java(TM) 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) standards, as well as comprehensive support for the J2ME Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) and Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP). Support for CLDC and MIDP allows developers to quickly create Java technology-based applications and services for CLDC/MIDP-enabled wireless devices such as mobile phones and pagers. In addition to key third-party components such as the PointBase database and iSmartGrid, Eliad Technologies' small footprint Java visualization technology, CodeWarrior for Wireless, Java Edition includes extensions to back-end legacy databases, entry level applications, and high security communications. Metrowerks will also deliver versions of CodeWarrior for Wireless that include all of the functionality of the Java Edition with additional functionality for PDA and games developers. CodeWarrior for Wireless, Gaming Edition, is expected to ship in September 2001, and CodeWarrior for Wireless, PDA Edition, is expected to ship in December 2001. CodeWarrior for Java Card Platform(TM) Metrowerks is releasing a beta version of the first integrated software development tool set specifically designed to create applications for the Java Card technology-based smart card platform.

The tool set will help accelerate the delivery of Java Card technology-based applications in key industries such as financial services, telecommunications, and government. The CodeWarrior for Java Card platform tools will provide developers with a fully integrated environment for developing Java Card technology-based applications and will integrate with many of the industry's leading card readers and software development kits (SDKs), including those from Schlumberger, Gemplus and Oberthur. The beta program will begin later this month. The tools are expected to ship in October 2001. CodeWarrior for Symbian In August 2001, Metrowerks expects to deliver a complete set of CodeWarrior® software development tools for the Symbian Java technology platform.

The tools will be geared specifically for third-party product, application and services development for Symbian-based wireless information devices. The first CodeWarrior for Symbian tools will ship in two versions: CodeWarrior for Symbian, Java Basic Edition; and CodeWarrior for Symbian, Java Professional Edition. Subsequent product releases will include C/C++ support. Manufacturers developing devices based on the Symbian platform include Ericsson, Kenwood, Motorola, Nokia, Panasonic, Psion, Sanyo and Sony. About Metrowerks Founded in 1985 and headquartered in Austin, Texas, Metrowerks develops, markets and supports CodeWarrior hardware and software development tools and middleware for a number of operating systems and the most popular microprocessors. CodeWarrior tools allow programmers to build applications from one unique integrated development environment (IDE).
