Motorola and Nextel Announce New Capabilities For Java(TM) Technology-Enabled Handsets

New Enhancements Enable Developers to Create Secure, Internet- Based Applications Motorola (NYSE: MOT) and Nextel Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: NXTL) today announced that Motorola i85s and i50sx handsets on the Nextel network will support enhanced functionality beginning in August. The new features deliver powerful security, over-the-air application downloading, and connectivity capabilities to Nextel Internet- ready phone customers and Java(TM) application developers. The Motorola i85s and i50sx handsets are the first Java(TM) 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME(TM)) technology-enabled handsets in North America. The two companies will demonstrate these capabilities at the JavaOne(SM) Developer Conference, June 4-8 at San Francisco's Moscone Center. The i85s and i50sx phones will support the following capabilities: -- Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol (https) -- Enables end- to-end secure connections between the handset and Internet or Intranet servers. -- Over-The-Air Download Application (OAD) -- When used in combination with the Nextel/Motorola application distribution web site, subscribers will be able to download applications over-the-air to their Java technology-enabled handsets. -- Serial Port Connectivity -- Enables access via the existing serial port at the base of the handset to Java capabilities so developers may extend the reach of i85s and i50sx handsets to tethered devices. "These enhancements reinforce Motorola's and Nextel's joint commitment to providing developers with leading edge tools for developing applications that address the needs of business customers," said Bill Werner, corporate vice president of Motorola and general manager of the company's iDEN Subscriber Group. "Together, Motorola and Nextel are offering developers the opportunity to take advantage of more advanced technology and functionality in creating innovative applications."

"When combined with the only nationwide, Internet Protocol (IP) based, packet data network, these handsets offer developers the premier platform on which to create compelling business and high end consumer applications," said Greg Santoro, vice president of Internet and Wireless Services for Nextel.

These enhancements are being provided in all J2ME technology- enabled enabled handsets manufactured after early August, 2001. Handsets purchased prior this date can be updated with these new features by simply upgrading the phone software.
