Motorola Supports GSM Association's M-Services Guidelines for Mobile Internet Services

Motorola's GPRS Products, Solutions Highly Complementary to GSM Association's efforts

Motorola today expressed strong support for the GSM Association's M-Services initiative to accelerate deployment and adoption of mobile Internet services within the GSM community this year by defining guidelines for creation of those services.

Motorola, a worldwide leader in mobile Internet solutions and services, said M-Services should demonstrate the power of GPRS by delivering an enriched mobile experience. Motorola's leadership in GPRS handsets, applications and infrastructure stands to be enhanced by the GSM Association's initiative to guide handset manufacturers and software developers.

The M services guidelines, in conjunction with the open standards initiatives of the WAP Forum, SyncML, Wireless Village, and others, are expected to go a long way towards accelerating adoption of wireless data services because interoperability between services and devices enhances the benefits to consumers using GPRS handsets worldwide. M-Services is expected to provide a wide array of features that are consistently available on GSM cellular networks, such as highly customizable and downloadable graphics, music, video, games, ring tones and screen savers.

"Motorola believes the operators of the GSM Association have taken a significant step towards increasing the demand for cellular applications services," said Janiece Webb, senior vice president and general manager of Motorola's Internet Software and Content Group. "Standardizing these services also advances the industry- wide efforts to develop multi-media messaging services, which Motorola is also committed to support. Motorola will review its portfolio of devices, platforms and solutions and adapt them to support the newly defined M-Services features as soon as possible."

Motorola's GPRS product line is central to the development and adoption of solutions like those to be offered by M-Services because GPRS offers an 'always on, always connected', high speed mobile data service. The always-on capability of GPRS, along with its ease of connectivity from mobile data terminals to the mobile Internet and to IP-based company Intranets, makes it efficient and, therefore, desirable to consumers. GPRS also opens up the mobile market to a wealth of data applications, including e- commerce, email, and data transfer.

Motorola will add M-Services developer support as part of its outreach to application developers in the Motorola Applications Global NETwork (MAGNET) program. Third party development of applications that take advantage of M-services are expected to drive even greater revenue opportunities on GSM networks.

Motorola works with customers to customize, implement and maintain GPRS solutions as part of its professional services offerings. Those services consist of wireless consulting, systems planning solutions definition, systems integration, training and technical support.
