Nokia broadens its connectivity solutions offering with M2M Platform

Nokia has today unveiled a new platform for M2M business at the Nokia Connection event in Singapore. M2M (machine-to-machine or mobile-to-machine) combines telecommunications and information technology to automate processes, integrate company assets in its IT system, and create value-added services. This platform can be implemented in a wide range of application and solution environments such as automatic meter reading, security, elevator control, fleet management, vending and telemedicine.

" We are delighted to extend Nokia's product and solution offering to a new area, connecting devices in a seamless and easy manner. The Nokia M2M Platform utilizes the existing mobile network capacity in an intelligent way for the transfer of machine originated data, and by doing so it creates exciting new business opportunities for a variety of players. Our solution is unique in hiding the complexitiy of mobile infrastructure, which enables fast and lean deployment by a number of industries without prior mobile expertise," said Hannu Huttunen, Vice President, Special Products, Nokia Mobile Phones.

The Nokia M2M Platform is a complete wireless end-to-end solution for developing M2M applications. It will typically link the company´s remote assets such as vending machines, vehicles and other equipment to its existing IT infrastructure. The Nokia M2M Gateway bridges the GSM network and the Internet by providing a two-way connection between applications located on the Internet or on a company's server and within remote devices.

A Machine-to-Machine platform consists of two elements, the gateway and the connectivity terminal. The Nokia M2M Gateway is an open software product, based on the widely accepted industry standards. This provides easier development, operation and maintenance of various M2M applications and services. The Nokia 20 connectivity terminal is installed within a remote device, such as a vending machine or an elevator, and it offers HSCSD data connection, voice and SMS text messaging over EGSM900/1800 networks. Together with the Nokia M2M Gateway, the Nokia 20 makes entry to the M2M business easy and convenient, as well as provides an evolution path for future mobile technologies.

Companies can adopt the platform for several business and application purposes. Kone, one of the world's leading elevator and escalator companies, is improving the reliability and safety of elevators and escalators by remote monitoring and emergency telephone communication. Enermet, one of the world's leading suppliers of energy systems for meter reading, is utilizing the Nokia M2M Platform to control the energy metering processes. The Nokia solution will also create new business opportunities for system integrators and gateway service providers. Novo Group, one of Scandinavia´s largest IT service organizations with subsidiaries worldwide, will provide M2M gateway services to small and medium size businesses. And Telenor, a world class mobile operator, will be the first to pilot the Nokia M2M Gateway technology to create new business opportunities in this exciting market segment.
