PointBase is First to Market With a Java Technology-Based SQL Relational Database Running On the Java 2, Micro Edition, 'J2ME' and Java 2, Standard Edition 'J2SE' Platforms

PointBase Micro(TM), the industry's first relational database with less than 45KB footprint for mobile and occasionally connected devices, hits the market at Sun's 2001 JavaOne(SM) Developer Conference in San Francisco

PointBase, the leader in application database technology based on the Java(TM) platform for extending and synchronizing enterprise data among servers, Internet appliances, mobile applications, and occasionally connected devices, today announced an industry first with general availability of PointBase Micro(TM), a new fast, ultra-small SQL relational database with a footprint of less than 45KB. Written entirely in the Java(TM) programming language, the database is optimized for Sun's Java(TM) 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME(TM)) and Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE(TM)) and uses a subset of Java Database Connectivity (JDBC(TM)) technology as the API, making it ideal for next-generation Java technology-based database applications for occasionally connected and mobile devices, such as smart phones and PDAs.

The announcement came today during the 2001 JavaOne(SM) Developer Conference, Sun's premier Java developers' event hosted in San Francisco.

"PointBase Micro is the only Java technology-based SQL relational database that runs on both the J2ME and J2SE platforms," said PointBase Founder and CEO Bruce Scott. "A footprint of less than 45KB for the J2ME platform marks an incredible technological breakthrough. The architecture of PointBase Micro fulfills the growing demand for a powerful data management and synchronization solution for the very small handheld device market. PointBase Micro is delivering to the Java technology developer community a forward thinking design innovation that enables developers using Java technology to gain a competitive advantage with low cost of ownership by quickly and cost-effectively developing and deploying next generation applications for the new world of mobile computing."

Written entirely in the Java programming language, PointBase Micro solves incompatibility problems that many enterprise customers encounter. The deployment of different device platforms throughout an organization often makes portability of software applications problematic for developers. From central data stores, PointBase's products enable the synchronization of data to servers, server appliances, mobile and occasionally connected devices.

PointBase Micro's ability to address both the J2ME and J2SE platforms allows maximum code re-use, shortens development times and speeds time to market. Sun's newest Java Platform, the J2ME platform, is aimed at machines with limited hardware resources such as PDAs, cell phones, and other consumer electronic and embedded devices.

"Sun is pleased that PointBase has embraced the new J2ME platform and has developed PointBase Micro to help solve compatibility issues for developers," said Aisling MacRunnels, director of marketing, Sun Microsystems Software Systems Group. "Advancements made by companies like PointBase further confirm our belief that the Java platform provides an end-to-end solution for creating state-of-the-art networked products and applications."

About the PointBase Product Family

PointBase delivers Java(TM) technology-based application database management software for ISVs, VARs, corporate development teams and device manufacturers who are designing traditional server, server appliance, mobile, and occasionally connected embedded device applications. The product family consists of PointBase Micro, PointBase Embedded, PointBase Server and PointBase UniSync.
