Red-M First to Enable Third Generation--3G--Mobile Services With Bluetooth

Red-M demonstrates convergence of mobile data, voice and video communications at Bluetooth Congress 2001, Monte Carlo

Red-M(TM), a leading supplier of advanced Bluetooth(TM) networking product solutions, today announces the next step in its strategy of providing seamless mobility using Bluetooth technology. For the first time, Red-M is showing the delivery of third generation (3G) mobile services using an in-building Bluetooth network to a range of mobile devices. The system illustrates the potential of converged data, voice and video wireless communications and the ability of Bluetooth to provide these services in local environments such as public concourses, offices and homes.

At the core of the system is Red-M's award winning Bluetooth networking products and technology - the 3000AS access server, 1000AP access point and Red-M BIAS(TM) (Bluetooth Internet access server) software. These Bluetooth certified products demonstrate the power of piconet-based networking applications. Using the network, users can:

- Make phone calls over the Bluetooth network from a Bluetooth enabled headset via a Red-M access point and access server, out to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN)

- Experience voice and video streaming media on a range of handheld devices including web tablets and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs)

- Participate in multi-user video conferencing and use video security applications over a Bluetooth network

- Access Internet and Intranet web and Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) content from a range of computer, PDA and phone devices

- Perform m-commerce transactions over the Bluetooth network

- Connect between office and home for email and other applications over a secure VPN connection

Comments Simon Gawne, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for Red-M, "We believe the delivery of local wireless networks using Bluetooth is highly complementary to the roll-out of third generation (3G) cellular services. For the first time we have demonstrated the potential of Bluetooth as a local, in-building 3rd generation network that combines data, voice and video communications on one network. This network further demonstrates the exciting potential for Bluetooth and power of Red-M's technology."
