[Tokyo], 4 June, 2001: Spider-Man will soon be slinging his way into the lives of millions of mobile phone users in Japan as Riot Entertainment (RIOT-E, www.riot-e.com), the world leader in wireless entertainment, announced today plans to launch a dynamic content package featuring Marvel’s world famous superhero. Created in partnership with Cybird Co., Ltd. one of the pioneers in the development of Japanese wireless content, RIOT-E’s Spider-Man wireless service will feature hundreds of incredible images of the webslinger that subscribers can download to customize their mobile devices. Available today, the content package will be offered on a subscription basis by Japan’s Big Four operators -- NTT DoCoMo, J-Phone, KDDI and DDI Pocket.

With excitement for the summer 2002 debut of Columbia Pictures/Marvel Entertainment’s Spider-Man: The Movie building at a frenetic pace, worldwide interest in the superhero is at an all-time high. Subscribers to RIOT-E’s Spider-Man service will be able to download a new comic image of their favourite hero every day for the next year -- leading up to his big screen debut. The pictures will be presented in full colour with technology that controls the timing of distribution of images already pooled on the server and recognizes images best suited for users' mobile phones among the pool. This technology will yield higher resolution photos than pictures offered from SMS and WAP programs.

“Spider-Man is an icon across the globe and has wide demographic appeal. Mobile users in Japan will relish the opportunity to customize their devices with his high-flying array of moves,” said Jan Wellmann, CEO of RIOT-E. “As the leading mobile entertainment provider and publisher, we are continuing to blaze new trails with compelling content featuring characters that millions of people know and love.”

"We are very pleased to deliver a worldwide popular comic character, Spider-Man, to Japanese fans through our mobile contents service,” commented Hori San, President and CEO of Cybird Co., Ltd. ”We would like to continue to provide this kind of opportunities in which Japanese mobile-phone users can meet such attractive comic characters as Spider-Man."

The Spider-Man package marks the latest programming originating from RIOT-E’s extensive partnership with Marvel Enterprises (NYSE: MVL). To date, the company has enjoyed tremendous success with its Marvel-inspired content, including its X-Men games which have run with operators in the Philippines (Global Handyphone), Italy (Telecom Italia Mobile – TIM), Spain (Telefonica) and Finland (Radiolinja). In Europe alone, the X-Men mobile games have generated more than a million mobile originated messages and attracted thousands of players. In Japan, RIOT-E’s pay-per-download service has attracted close to 200,000 downloads of X-Men characters and images by subscribers to Japan’s Big Three operators.
