Siemens to offer packetvideo’s industry-leading rich media technology to Mobile operators

Siemens Information and Communication Mobile (IC Mobile), a leading provider of mobile networks, solutions and devices for mobile businesses, and PacketVideo Corporation, the recognized leader in software for the delivery of rich media over today’s wireless networks, today announced that Siemens will offer wireless multimedia services based on PacketVideo’s MPEG-4 technology platform to mobile operators worldwide. Under this new licensing agreement, PacketVideo’s wireless multimedia platform will be integrated with Siemens IC Mobile’s Open Mobile Internet Platform as well as existing and future mobile solutions.

This partnership provides mobile operators with the opportunity to demonstrate to their subscribers the value of advanced rich media services over their new General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) networks. These advanced services will offer mobile operators new revenue opportunities, competitive differentiation, and increased customer acquisition and retention.

This agreement comes at a critical time as most operators around the world are now testing and deploying their enhanced service systems. As part of the partnership, Siemens has already signed up 19 trials with mobile operators to test PacketVideo’s rich media products over Siemens’ UMTS networks worldwide this year.

“We expect PacketVideo’s platform to become the key enabling technology of future mobile video applications that will strongly enhance the mobile user’ s experience,” said Thorsten Heins, president of Solutions for the IC Mobile Group. “We believe that rich media services over wireless will be an explosive growth area for GPRS and UMTS and will be the driving force for mobile commerce, entertainment, and information.”

PacketVideo and Siemens have already demonstrated the interoperability of their technologies via GPRS and UMTS networks. Now, the two companies are joining forces to pave the way to anytime, anywhere rich media services. Mobile operators will be able to offer consumers exciting, new rich media applications such as access to movie theater schedules and previews, weather and traffic reports, and home or business video surveillance.

“Siemens and PacketVideo share a common commitment to bringing standards-based solutions to mobile operators around the world,” said James Brailean, Ph.D., president, chief executive officer and co-founder of PacketVideo. “Through Siemens’ extensive customer base of mobile operators, PacketVideo is broadening our channel of distribution and the availability of advanced rich media communications services to the mobile marketplace.”
