Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: SBL) announced today at Retail Solutions in Birmingham, United Kingdom, a dual-input, handheld computer that allows users both keypad and pen-based data input, wireless wide area network (WWAN) and local area network (WLAN) connectivity, based on the Microsoft Pocket PC operating system.

The Symbol PDT 8100 provides anywhere-anytime information access and is the ideal information tool for a growing global mobile workforce, across a range of vertical markets and out into the enterprise.

The PDT 8100 blends functionality and ruggedness: Users can opt for pen-based input in a menu-driven computing environment, or select keypad input if commands need to be typed in. WWAN connectivity to a subscriber network allows users connect with and receive mission-critical data from any location; WLAN connectivity allows users to send and receive data when in range of a standard 802.11 or 802.11b wireless LAN. The device is rugged, durable and designed to withstand real-world usage, including multiple four-foot drops to concrete and extreme environments.

The PDT 8100 also features an optional high-performance laser bar code scanner and the StrongArm SA1110 processor. It has been designed for a number of vertical applications, including delivery and pre-sales in route accounting, surveying in test and measurement data collection, retail price checking and inventory, patient management in healthcare and package tracking and deliveries in transportation & logistics.

Other features of the PDT 8100 include multiple keyboard options, a 1/4 in. VGA display, a back-lit keyboard and touch-screen stylus entry. Optional VoIP capabilities, a user-accessible Type 2 Compact Flash Slot and a full line of accessories enhance the functionality of the PDT 8100, making it applicable to a broader range of markets and applications.
