Trolltech, NeoMagic Collaborate on Platform for Handheld Internet and Personal Entertainment Devices

Trolltech and NeoMagic (Nasdaq: NMGC) are collaborating to integrate a rich and stable development platform for the new generation of handheld Internet and entertainmentgaming appliances.

The platform consists of three elements: NeoMagic's upcoming System-on-Chip (SOoC) offering; the Lynuxworks' embedded BlueCat Linux operating system; and Trolltech's Qt/Embedded, which has emerged as the de facto standard GUI framework and windowing system for the embedded Linux application space.

"The creation of this platform advances the strategy of our two companies in this arena," said Haavard Nord, Trolltech's CEO. "We wanted to reduce the number of variables that application developers have to consider in creating software for the embedded Linux market. We feel that this stack accomplishes that goal. By integrating the NeoMagic SOoC, the OS, and Qt/Embedded, we have created a platform that combines the functionality developers want with the predictability and stability developers need."

The upcoming SOoC solution from NeoMagic is designed to be the best solution for the next generation of handheld Internet appliances, offering the lowest power, smallest size, and best multimedia features to meet the ever-increasing multimedia demand for enhanced graphics, audio and video playback, low power consumption, compact form factor and in affordable price targets in handheld systems. Mark Singer, Vice President of Corporate Marketing at NeoMagic, noted, "Time-to-market is a key concern for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). By partnering with Trolltech and Lynuxworks to integrate Qt/Embedded with our upcoming SOC, we will create a seamless handheld multimedia development platform with a complete, stable and usable set of end-user applications. This platform will be a great help to OEMs who chose embedded Linux as the basis for new generations of hand-held Internet appliances, as it will significantly accelerate their development efforts.", elevating the Personal Digital Assistant to the level of a Personal Entertainment Device.

Trolltech's Qt/Embedded is the embedded Linux port of Qt, the emerging standard for cross-platform C++ GUI application development. Qt allows developers to write single-source GUI applications that can be ported among four major platforms (Microsoft Windows, all major variants of Linux/Unix, MacOS X, and all major distributions of embedded Linux) with a simple recompile.
