ZAD offers a unique infrastructure solution for application deployment. ZAD serves as a bridge that links corporate or consumer applications to end user remote devices, such as WPDAs (Wireless Personal Digital Assistants), via the Internet. While corporations realize the need and competitive advantage of providing their mobile workforce with the ability to access and interact with their corporation's centralized applications; it can be complex, costly and time consuming for them to build and maintain the necessary infrastructure. ZAD breaks the barrier to entry costs and empowers developers with its easy to use toolkit, making it fast to create and maintain centralized corporate or consumer applications for deployment to remote end users.
"I think what struck me the most about the Zydant approach is that its one of those things that seems obvious, but only after somebody has figured it out. The first spreadsheet, the first windows-oriented user interface and the first relational database are all in that category. I think your competition will (figuratively) slap themselves on the forehead as if to say 'Hey, I should have thought of that,'" said William L. Pribyl, principal consultant of DataCraft Inc., Houston.
One of the many customer use examples might be a wholesale microbrewery specializing in dark ales. This microbrewery competes fiercely with other national brands for retail shelf space, responsiveness to retail outlets is critical. Through market surveys this microbrewery has confirmed that during peak times, sales have been lost to competitors, simply because the retail outlets have run out of stock. The microbrewery sales reps regularly check inventory stock levels and shelf displays in the stores and need to be able to quickly notify the warehouse and drivers of changes in delivery schedules and stock quantity requirements. By implementing ZAD, the sales reps can update delivery schedules on the microbrewery's central application server in real time via their WPDAs. The microbrewery's delivery drivers can now check for these changes on their WPDAs and can alter their routes to accommodate extra deliveries.
ZAD combines the flexibility of a browser-based technology like Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer, with the functionality of a dedicated client like your desktop PC application. Using efficient protocol methods, ZAD is fast and has the ability to present multiple applications that have the crisp look and feel of a dedicated client. ZAD allows applications to be dynamically updated, wirelessly, so there is no need to download a new client for each version update, eliminating the need for synching or interacting at the desktop PC.
Portability and extensibility have been designed into ZAD from the point of conception. ZAD currently runs on Palm OS (Operating System) based WPDAs, but because it has been engineered using Object Oriented techniques and is written in the C++ language, it can be easily ported to run on Microsoft PocketPC, Win32 and other operating systems. ZAD can be easily extended to take advantage of specific user interface or operating systems features for a given client devices operating system and readily allow new language features to be added. ZAD can be easily ported to various PDA devices currently on the market, many with wireless modem capabilities; the Palm VII devices from Palm Computing, the Palm V devices from Omni Sky, the Visor from HandSpring, the Jornada from Hewlett-Packard Company, the Cassiopeia from Casio, the iPAQ Pocket PC from Compaq, the ruggedized Palm based and Pocket PC based PDAs from Symbol Technologies and the Voyager from Royal.
ZAD is currently running on the Palm OS (Operating System) on the Palm Vx and VIIx devices. Zydant is working with a strategic partner preparing to enter pilot project stage. While ZAD is currently targeted at the rapidly growing WPDA market place, Zydant may choose to extend ZAD to other remote or wireless devices in the future like selected cell phones, handheld computers and the online desktop or Laptop PC.
