Extended Systems Enhances Use of 802.11 for Handheld Device Users

XTNDConnect Server 2.6 offers automatic updates with Scheduled Sync

Extended Systems (Nasdaq:XTND), a leading provider of mobile data management and wireless connectivity solutions, today announced at CTIA WIRELESS I.T. and Internet 2001 that the next version of its data synchronization and management software, XTNDConnect Server 2.6, will offer a valuable add-on feature for 802.11 handheld device users.

With the use of Scheduled Sync handheld devices can automatically receive email, PIM (personal information management), and database updates; thus eliminating the need for the user to manually initiate the synchronization function. This feature is especially important to the rapidly growing number of 802.11 users who constantly require mobile access to current data but do not have any other option today than to stop and manually sync.

"Considering the exploding adoption rate of 802.11, it is critical that we deliver innovative data management solutions to the enterprise that maximize this technology and continue to raise the value of handheld devices in the enterprise," said Extended Systems CEO and president Steve Simpson.

In addition to the add-on Schedule Sync feature, XTNDConnect Server 2.6 will provide several other key benefits included with the product, among them is time zone support for Palm OS. This feature is important for companies using Palm devices because it eliminates the need for maintaining servers dedicated to each geographical time zone and, according to Simpson, "demonstrates Extended Systems commitment to supporting global enterprises." Also included are client configuration options for faster/easier client deployment, and baseline improvements to synchronization of PIM, email and ODBC data on Palm OS, Pocket PC and EPOC handheld devices.

Pricing and Availability

XTNDConnect Server 2.6 will be available Sept. 24, 2001. Pricing is $95 per user, based on 1000-user volume. Schedule Sync, an add-on to XTNDConnect Server which will immediately support Pocket PC and will support Palm OS later this fall, is $20.
