Intel and HP Announce Intel StrongARM Processor to Power Newest HP Jornada PDA

Companies Also Collaborating to Integrate Voice and Data Capabilities Into Future HP Devices

Intel Corporation and Hewlett-Packard Company today announced that the Intel(R) StrongARM(1) processor will power the new HP Jornada 560 personal digital assistant (PDA) series. The newest member of the HP Jornada family will also use Intel StrataFlash(R) memory to provide high-performance memory capabilities. The HP Jornada 560 PDA series enables users to work efficiently and effectively while running a variety of business, multimedia and Internet applications/a on the device's Microsoft(1) Pocket PC 2002 operating system.

In addition, Intel and HP announced plans to work together to bring voice communication and next-generation wireless applications to upcoming HP handheld products. To merge phone and data processing features, HP will support the Intel(R) Personal Internet Client Architecture (Intel PCA) initiative. Intel PCA is a development blueprint for building wireless handheld communications devices that combine voice communications and Internet access capabilities.

"Intel has designed its Intel StrongARM processor and Intel StrataFlash memory technologies to optimize power consumption and performance in wireless handheld devices," said Peter Green, general manager of Intel's Handheld Computing Division. "We look forward to collaborating with HP to bring devices and applications to market that help users fully realize the benefits of advanced wireless networks."

"The HP Jornada 560 PDA series offers mobile professionals a variety of options to maximize performance," said Kok-Khoon Lim, general manager of HP's Jornada organization. "The Intel StrongARM processor provides a strong balance of performance and power to quickly and efficiently run a variety of applications. We also see significant value in Intel's architectural approach with Intel PCA for delivering next-generation wireless voice and data devices."

The combination of Intel StrongARM and the innovative Intel StrataFlash memory enables HP Jornada 560 PDA series users to take advantage of the full benefits of Microsoft's Pocket PC 2002 OS and other multimedia applications. The Intel SA-1110 applications processor typically dissipates less than one-half watt, greatly extending battery life for handheld devices while providing powerful performance. The balance of power and performance is available for image viewing, video and audio record and playback, speech and handwriting recognition, and for business applications such as personal information management, word processing and spreadsheets.

HP also chose Intel StrataFlash memory to store both application and operating system code in the newest member of the HP Jornada PDA family. Intel StrataFlash memory offers a cost-effective, single-chip solution for code execution and data storage, using an innovative multilevel cell technology that makes it ideal for Internet phones and PDAs where high density and low cost per bit are important.
