IONA Announces Orbix/E 2.0 For Next-Generation Telecommunications, Manufacturing and Wireless Embedded Systems

Leading e-Business Platform Provider Extends Total Business Integration to the Growing Embedded Applications Market

Embedded Systems Conference--IONA(R), the leading e-Business Platform provider for Total Business Integration(TM) (NASDAQ: IONA), today announced Orbix/E(TM) 2.0, a lightweight distributed computing platform optimized for embedded applications. This product extends the penetration of the IONA e-Business Platform for Total Business Integration, making it easy for organizations to integrate their embedded applications into the rest of the enterprise. IONA will be demonstrating Orbix/E 2.0 at the IONA booth (#1710) at the Embedded Systems Conference being held September 4 - 7, 2001 at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, Massachusetts.

Traditional embedded application development required arcane skills, and involved low-level complex programming. Orbix/E 2.0 offers a significantly easier-to-use and more productive approach to building embedded applications, while delivering comparable application performance. By building Orbix/E 2.0 on the industry's distributed computing standards, IONA also relieves organizations of traditional embedded application concerns with platform heterogeneity, interoperability and distribution.

"Orbix/E is an ideal framework for building distributed and scalable services platforms for the next-generation telecommunications industry," said Peter Leong, chief architect at Syndeo Corporation. "We needed an extremely fast, embeddable, and flexible middleware solution on which to build our Syion 426 next-generation local exchange platform. Orbix/E allowed Syndeo to decrease our time to market and increase our system performance. Lastly, through its source licensing model, Orbix/E provided the flexibility we required to meet carriers' stringent requirements for scalability and reliability."

"Next generation smart devices require solid distributed application infrastructure," said Caroline Yao, Director of Partner Solutions at Wind River Systems. "We are pleased to be partnering with IONA in our WindLink program to bring the Orbix/E application integration solution into the VxWorks market."

"There is an explosion of interest in building and deploying embedded software on memory constrained devices," said Paul Moxon, product director at IONA. "Developers need a solution that is easy-to-use and lightweight, but does not sacrifice performance. For telecommunications, manufacturing, wireless and handheld devices, and a variety of other applications, Orbix/E 2.0 delivers a high-level development platform that operates at the speed of raw sockets. And only IONA, with its Total Business Integration strategy, can connect these embedded applications to the rest of the enterprise."

IONA is announcing a C/C++ and Java version of Orbix/E 2.0 (previously marketed as Orbacus/E). Orbix/E 2.0 for Java offers a pure Java implementation with functional equivalence to the C/C++ version of the product. With support for Sun Microsystem's J2ME, J2SE and Personal Java specifications, Orbix/E 2.0 is suitable for a variety of wireless and handheld devices.

Orbix/E 2.0 for C/C++ offers as much as a nine-fold reduction in footprint, and a significant improvement in performance. Orbix/E 2.0 for C/C++ is suitable for a broader range of embedded markets, including the network processor and digital signal processing (DSP) markets. Its ongoing support for C++ will also make Orbix/E 2.0 attractive to telecommunications and network equipment vendors developing solutions for converged IP services, especially optical switch, softswitch and wireless infrastructure vendors.

Pricing and Availability:

Orbix/E 2.0 is distributed as source code. Both versions of Orbix/E 2.0 will be generally available on September 28, 2001.
