Motorola Goes to Extremes with Ruggedized Mobile Phone

Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced the ruggedized i55sr handset, a sporty mobile phone with rubber overmolding for durability in challenging environments. Designed to withstand extreme conditions, the Motorola i55sr handset meets military standards for shock and vibration resistance, and its rubber overmolding provides a better grip and protection for use in rugged conditions.

The i55sr handset is the first ruggedized phone in North America with Java(TM) 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME(TM)) technology, allowing users to customize the phone with software applications to fit their business and personal lifestyles. The handset comes with pre-installed business and entertainment applications such as a calculator and a Sega game, and it also allows users to download other applications to meet their individual needs. Examples of potential applications include stair calculators, applications that allow employees to check inventory and order supplies from the field, and customized enterprise applications designed for individual organizations. The i55sr model is the latest in a family of J2ME technology-enabled handsets from Motorola, which include the i85s and i50sx handsets.

"The Motorola i55sr handset is durable enough for rugged environments yet compact enough for everyday use," said Bill Werner, corporate vice president of Motorola and general manager of the company's iDEN(R) Subscriber Group. "This stylish phone is the latest in a series of ruggedized Motorola handsets designed for those professionals who work in physically demanding environments."

Optional features available (through www.motorola.com/idenupdate) include voice-activated dialing, voice recorder, and custom style settings, which allow the phone to adapt to different environments, such as the car, work site, or home.

Available in yellow with black overmolding or dark gray with light gray overmolding, the i55sr handset measures 5.2 x 2 x 1.3 inches (133 x 52 x 34 mm) and weighs five ounces (155 grams).(2) There are four battery options, for standby time of up to five days and talk time of up to four and a half hours.(3) The phone also includes rubber overmolded battery covers in two sizes and matching colors.

The i55sr handset is compatible with the Motorola iBoard(TM) portable keyboard, giving users the option of a full-size keyboard for composing e-mail messages or entering text into the handset's calendar or phone book.
