Sierra Wireless Announces Toshiba OEM Design Win And Volume Commitment

Wireless Communications Modules To Be Integrated Into Toshiba Handheld Computers

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ:SWIR) (TSE:SW.) announced today that it has secured an OEM design win to supply wireless communications modules to Toshiba.

Sierra Wireless will supply SB555 wireless communications modules for integration into Toshiba handheld computers. The initial volume is valued at approximately US$11 million. Shipments by Sierra Wireless are expected to commence around yearend following the completion of SB555 product development, certification and manufacturing introduction activities.

"We are pleased to win this business with Toshiba, especially considering their leadership position in the mobile computing market," said Glen Brownlee, President and Chief Operating Officer, Sierra Wireless. "Computer and consumer electronics companies are moving towards providing integrated wireless communications and we are well positioned to support this trend."

The Sierra Wireless SB555 is the latest addition to Sierra Wireless' growing line of wireless communications modules and is designed for tight integration into wide variety of computers including notebooks, handhelds and consumer electronics.

The SB555 will support voice and data communications on cellular networks using circuit (IS95A protocol) or packet switched (1xRTT protocol) communications on North American cellular (800 MHz) and PCS (1900 MHz) bands. The Sierra Wireless SB555 wireless communications module is based on the Core Wireless Engine(TM) architecture developed by Sierra Wireless and will allow mobile users to access the Internet and other enterprise applications at speeds of up to 153 kbps. SB555 prototypes were previewed during June in Hong Kong at the CDMA 2001 conference.

There are no changes to Sierra Wireless' third quarter financial guidance as a result of this news. Sierra Wireless expects to provide its next regular update to financial guidance on October 15, 2001, following the release of third quarter financial results.
