Symbol Introduces New Wireless Web Appliance With Integrated Bar Code Scanning and Telephony Capabilities

The NetVision(R) Data Phone Offers Voice and Data Functionality With Open Standards Flexibility

Symbol Technologies, Inc. introduced today, at Networld+Interop Atlanta (Booth No. 413), the first wireless Internet appliance that collects data and transmits both voice and data packets over IEEE 802.11b wireless networks and complies with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) H.323 standard for telephony.

The Symbol NetVision(R) Data Phone offers customers in retail, manufacturing, healthcare, hospitality and logistics the functionality of wireless voice and data applications in one web client device. Customers can easily take advantage of existing standard-based wireless and telephony infrastructures because the NetVision Data Phone operates on two of the most widely adopted technology standards worldwide for wireless data and wired voice transmission: IEEE 802.11b and H.323.

"Symbol continues to look ahead for our customers and identify ways they can improve their businesses by integrating wireless, mobile computing and bar-code data capture products into the work process," said Ray Martino, Vice President, Wireless Systems, Symbol Technologies, Inc. "The NetVision Data Phone is our latest example of innovative product development designed to enable mobility for mission critical applications."

The NetVision Data Phone offers applications in a number of vertical markets, providing increased productivity, improved service and reduced cost. For instance, retailers can use the NetVision Data Phone to scan products, access inventory and increase store manager mobility. In a warehouse setting, the NetVision Data Phone can be used by managers to collect information from shipping labels, access databases and handle routing and dispatching from anywhere within a facility.

The device, which can act as a web client, handheld computer, bar code scanner and telephone, enables users to make and receive phone calls, enter and submit data to a remote server, communicate by walkie-talkie with co-workers within a facility and scan a barcode for data capture. When deployed over the Symbol Spectrum24 High Rate wireless local area network (LAN), users of the NetVision Data Phone benefit from Symbol developed advanced mobility features, including voice prioritization, pre-emptive roaming, and quality of service (QoS).

The NetVision family of wireless voice over IP products allows customers to maximize existing standard based wireless infrastructures, from 2Mbps Frequency Hopping networks (802.11) to 11Mbps Direct Sequence (802.11b) networks. Karstadt Warenhaus AG of Germany, Europe's largest retailer, is deploying 10,000 NetVision Data Phones over the Symbol Spectrum24 Frequency Hopping wireless LAN.

The NetVision Data Phone will be showcased September 11th through September 14th at NetWorld+Interop Atlanta in the Symbol Booth, No. 413.
