Acer Communications Builds Motorola Predictive Text Input Technology into Mobile Phones for Easier Messaging

Motorola, a global leader in integrated communications solutions, announced today it has licensed its iTAP(TM) intelligent keypad text entry technology to Acer Communications and Multimedia Inc. Acer will use iTAP technology in the mobile phones it builds for mobile handset vendors, including Motorola, as a way to simplify and speed keypad text entry for sending text messages.

Acer has a worldwide license on iTAP technology for a three-year period during which it can build Motorola's iTAP technology into any mobile phone it manufactures for any vendor.

iTAP technology, Motorola's predictive text input technology, is designed to make life better by amplifying a consumer's ability to conduct business and communicate. By predicting words as consumers type on their mobile devices, iTAP technology simplifies keypad text input. iTAP technology predicts the most likely word associated with a particular sequence of key presses, which increases input speed, and improves accuracy and overall keypad use. With over 35,000 words in its dictionary, iTAP technology can predict most words on the first attempt, and it supports more than 20 languages, including Chinese, Dutch, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, German and Spanish. iTAP technology is part of Motorola's professional services portfolio where it can be used in customized and integrated solutions and systems that Motorola develops for key customers.

First Rollout of Acer-built Phone with iTAP Technology

Motorola began shipping its Acer-built Motorola Talkabout 191 in Asian and European GSM markets earlier this year. Although Motorola is shipping a variety of phones with iTAP technology globally, the T191 is the first iTAP product that Acer has manufactured.

Further easing the integration of iTAP technology into mobile handsets produced for the market in China, Motorola's iTAP technology recently received China Electronic Standards Institute certification for meeting the stringent GB 18031 standard for Chinese text input.

"As Motorola continues to enhance wireless communication for the end user, we recognized the need to license our technology for use in other devices," said Robert Molnar, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of Multimedia Platforms and Technologies for Motorola's Internet Software and Content Group. "We're pleased that Acer has recognized that iTAP technology improves the way people use their mobile phones to send text messages."
