CSR Launches Second Generation Bluetooth Product Range Based on BlueCore2

New Silicon & Software Combined Products Designed to Accelerate Bluetooth Adoption in Key Markets

CSR (Cambridge Silicon Radio) today announced the availability of its second generation of Bluetooth(TM) products based on its new single-chip device, BlueCore2(TM).

The first version of BlueCore2, sampling now, features twice the range, twice the memory address space (1 Mbyte), with half the power consumption and half the footprint of BlueCore01, CSR's first generation solution which already features in half of all Bluetooth enabled end product designs. It includes a fully integrated 2.4GHz radio, baseband circuitry, a microcontroller and memory on a single CMOS chip. Future versions, available in 2002, will also feature additional ARM and DSP co-processors.

In addition, to provide customers with an improved level of support, CSR has developed hardware/software bundles for each of the fastest growing Bluetooth applications markets. These products combine CSR's BlueCore ICs with on-chip software and appropriate host software. The new products will provide developers in these key applications areas with an optimized solution that will enable them to rapidly integrate Bluetooth capability into end-user products.

"Bluetooth is now a mature worldwide standard and the emergence of second generation silicon and software solutions will drive penetration of the technology to a higher level. In the last 12 months the market has clearly segmented into core areas and as a result CSR is designing its next-generation product range to specifically support these areas," said Eric Janson, vice president North America sales, marketing and applications, CSR. "Our customers can now choose from a range of highly integrated, low cost, sophisticated solutions specifically developed to help them rapidly design and bring new products to the market."

The first product in this new range of hardware/software bundled products, BlueCore1-PC, has been finalized and is also available now. The product is targeted at OEMs building Bluetooth into Windows(R)-based desktop and notebook PCs. The product combines CSR's single-chip silicon and its operating firmware with a host resident software stack.

The range will be extended to cover new hardware and software products in 2002 including BlueCore2-Mobile, BlueCore2-PDA and BlueCore2-Access that combine the BlueCore hardware with host side Bluetooth stacks running on a variety of external hardware platforms and operating systems.

BlueCore2 operates over the full industrial temperature range and is manufactured on a 0.18 micron process.
